Locals dominate at Margate Week

The bowls was of a very high quality.

THE 48th Margate Week Bowls Tournament was a great success, with bowlers from all over the country taking part.
Locals players dominated, which was quite something, considering the quality of the visitors.
The winning women’s team was Margate CC’s Kobie Stander, Denise Westerveld, Dora Vosloo and Winnie Hess. The runners-up were Marthie Pringle, Lenie Geyer, Margie Randall and Vi Pells. In third place were Gail Mackay, Janet White, Noleen Ririe and Judy Badenhorst.
Session winners were teams captained by Robin Hutton, Cynthia McDuling, Moira Ford, Moira Humphrey, Jean Cairns, Lynn Bamber, Susan Fourie and team Santana.
The men’s section was won, yet again, by Eddie Fann, Barry Delvin, Johnny Westerveld and Mark Smith. Runners-up were Chris Forward, Ken Tonge, Mike Jeffrey and Danny McCarthy and third place was taken by Ollie Coetzer, Jan Venter, Ken Lancaster and Ally Wier.
Session winners were teams captained by Colin White, Bill Brown, Arthur Boschoff, Theo Wetter; Terry Kneale, Garry van Rensburg, Maurice Buckland and Cedric Glanfield.

Vital to the success of the week was the loyal support of Riverside Sports Club and The Village Bowling Club for the use of their greens, facilities, catering and technical staff.

A total of R1 700 was raised from donation for the ‘Spider’ on the Wednesday morning and R1 000 for Child Welfare at the show on the Thursday night.
The show ‘Magic Moments’, produced by Yvonne Bausek, was also a resounding success.

THE closing date for the men’s and women’s pairs was May 12 and will be May 26 for novices. All clubs must ensure that entries are submitted to the relevant competition secretaries, using the correct form with Bowls SA membership numbers supplied. Everyone is reminded that the condition for entry into the novice singles is that members must have been registered within the last three years (ie, registered after June 29, 2012) and have not won a district singles title.

WELL done to the women’s team, Maureen Head, Johannie Theron, Margie Randall and Tina Barbour, who are through to the semi-finals of the midweek league. Contributions for the hamper that is to be raffled during Hibiscus week are required from members.
The next competition is the Captain’s Anchor mixed fours this Friday, May 16. The convener is Tony Olivant and catering will be done by Penny Hartmann and Patti Mullen. The Fruit and Veg City mixed 2-4-2 takes place next Tuesday, May 20. Kevin Mullen will be convener and catering by Johannie Theron and Maureen Head. Duties for the week May 19 to 25: tabs, Irene Harris and Inger Mitchell; bar, Jody Slade and umpire, Trevor Celliers.

UMTENTWENI
ON the competitive side, the club men’s singles was won by Eric Griersen and both the women’s and men’s teams won last Saturday’s league games.
The next competitions are the 3rd Avenue Restaurant mixed fours, May 16 and the Abingdon Road Spar women’s pairs on Thursday, May 22.
A horse racing supper evening has been arranged for Wednesday, May 28 and the list can be found on the board. Visitors are welcome.

A BIG thank you to all helpers during Margate Week, especially those who helped on the greens, the barmen, ticket sellers and all women who assisted with catering.
The next sponsored competitions at the club are the Wingnuts Plumbing mixed 2-4-2 on May 19; Hibiscus Insurance Brokers mixed trips on May 22, Execudec mixed 2-4-2 on May 27 and the Martin Electronics men’s 2-4-2 on May 29.
There will be a bring and braai at the club this Friday, 16th, the ‘in house’ tabs-in Hyundai will take place this Saturday (17th), and there will be a breakfast and bowls on May 25th, so put your names on the list.
Everyone’s thoughts and prayers are with Alan and Aileen Ward as Alan undergoes treatment at the Port Shepstone Regional Hospital after an accident.

RESULTS for the Just Hair women’s pairs were overall, Pat Miller and Estelle Carter; runners up, Louise Dry and Rita Zietzman; second session, Hazel Delaney and Val Smith and board went to Hazel Delaney.
The overall winners of the 7th Heaven Restaurant men’s pairs were Jokkie van Buuren and Dave Banks; runners up, Cliff Moakes and Herman Botha; second session, Graham Gold and Willie Smith and board, Rob Lyle.

THE next club competitions are the Shelly Beach SuperSpar mixed trips on Tuesday, May 20 and the Engel and Volkers men’s fours on May 23.
The open day that was planned for May 18 has been moved to May 25 due to Nomads being held on the 18th.

THE highly anticipated ‘Fantastic Fours’ takes place this Saturday, May 17. Big cash prizes have attracted a full green and all those who have entered must register by 8.30am. There will be no tabs in the afternoon and spectators are most welcome.
Dice Graaf, Roger Humphrey and Eve Gower won the Dr Potgieter’s mixed trips, runners-up were Elbe Snyman, Trish Steyn and Trevor Smith and the session prize went to George Snyman, with Tommy and Myra Doubell.

The men’s Saturday 1st league team continues to do well, having collected five of the available 10 points at Port Shepstone last Saturday.
A bingo and burger evening will take place at The Breezeway on Friday, May 23, starting at 5pm. All are welcome.

THE quiz last Friday was well attended and all proceeds went to the SPCA. Well played to the Southbroom members who took part in the Margate Week. Session prizes went to the teams including Neels Boshoff, Heather Roberts, Lorraine Wijtman and Viv Date. A big thank you to Criss-Cross Security who sponsored the women’s ‘Fledglings’ team.
The Fish on the Pond men’s trips takes place on May 20, so get names down soon with Heather Roberts. A bowlers/golfers day will take place on Sunday, June 1 at 11.30am.

WELCOME back to Judy Aiston and Louise Shone who have had a few health hiccups.
The monthly nominated mixed trips sponsored by Hibberdene Pharmacy played last Friday afternoon was won by Arthur and Miriam Seager with Judy Aiston. Second prize went to Norman Aiston, Hana Svoboda and Louise Shone and session prize was won by Annatjie Human, Errol Brewer and Joey Venter.
Thanks once again to the Hibberdene Pharmacy for its generous sponsorship. The Hibiscus week will soon be upon us and a rink sponsorship will be gladly received.
