‘Hot’ tennis at chilly Harding

SOUTHERN Counties tennis got under way again for the year with Uvongo travelling to Harding last Sunday.However, they were sent home with their tail between their legs as Harding outscored them 65-37.
Willem Erasmus said the four Uvongo men were supported by two strong women players in Ellene Barbadimos and Lynette Shell, which helped Uvongo take games in the women’s doubles and mixed doubles games.
All in all, the players really enjoyed the change of scenery and different climate, although it was pretty cold by coastal standards.
Southern Counties and the Uvongo thanked Noel Kjonstad and the members at Harding for their wonderful hospitality.
A special word of thanks to Gloria Larkan for getting the fixtures going again.

Court resurfacing complete

GREAT news for all Uvongo Tennis Club members is that the court resurfacing is finally complete and the official opening will take place this Saturday, May 17th at 1pm.
Tennis will be first on the agenda and there will be a braai after play, when members are encouraged to socialise and family members can also be invited to join.
Participants must supply their own meat, but rolls and salads will be provided and the fires will be ready from 3.30pm.
A big thank you to both Douglas Mitchell and Southbroom Tennis Clubs for allowing Uvongo to make use of their facilities during the resurfacing period, enabling members to continue playing tennis.
Normal playing days resume after Saturday.
Welcome back to Muriel de Vries, who is on a working holiday and has been able to take time off to join members on the courts.
Thoughts and prayers are with family and friends of Sally Wesson and Val Kriel’s daughter, who both face acute medical problems.
Birthday wishes go to Pat Burger, Gloria Larkan, Duncan Biggar, Gerard Creamer and Harry Vermaak.
With courts back in action from Saturday, members will be required to carry out their board duties: May 17, Marietjie Stols; May 19, Lorna Taylor; May 21, Oliver Perrow.

‘Ol’ Lefty’ wished speedy recovery

IT was great to have four courts in action again at Umtentweni Tennis Club and visitors Willem Erasmus, Shauna Hudson and Brett Kjonstad joined members for a lovely afternoon of tennis.
Thanks to Pam Grobler for organising the sets so efficiently and for providing super eats for tea.
Members wish Val Beckett (‘Ol’ Lefty’) a speedy recovery from her operation – make sure they leave your left arm intact, Val, so that we can face your barrage of cuts and slices again soon.
It was good to see Jimmy Parsons back in action coaching on Court 6 and his pupils enjoyed having him back again after his long lay-off due to injury.
Chloë Dutton has done a wonderful job in the garden at the club and members thank her for her commitment.

THE KwaZulu-Natal Uvongo seniors tennis tournament is an open tournament and entrants do not have to be registered veterans. It will take place from July 18 to 20.
The cost is R400 per player, or R360 for players arriving on the morning of July 19.
