Bowling clubs need umpires
TECHNICAL officials are planning an umpire’s course in early August and clubs are urged to encourage markers to attend. Once again, at the Wednesday and Saturday leagues, it was apparent that clubs desperately need umpires. Contact Bernie or Esta at 039 3144172 or 083 7426718 for more information.

The MTN sponsored development fun day and braai last Thursday was a huge success. Thanks to the sponsor and Ron and Penny Weddell from MTN for organising the event. Winners were John Gibson, Sheelah Nel and Doreen van der Westhuizen on 8+32 and the runners-up were Chummy Smith, Wally Williams and Malcolm Taylor on 8+10.
Thank you to all visitors who supported the sponsored Fruit and Veg mixed 2-4-2 last Friday. John Sutton and Betty Bolton won on 4+14 and Eddie Louw and Chrissie Chancellor were runners-up on 4+12. First session prize was awarded to Barry Herbert and Sharon Smith on 2+21 and Vi Eltis and Brian Cross took the second session prize on 2+9.
The Early Birds had a very profitable fund-raising jumble sale last Saturday. Thanks to Vi Eltis and Edna and Alan Beckett, as well as all who donated jumble.
The Hopden’s Kwikspar open trips will be played on Wednesday, June 11 and there will be a ‘special general meeting’ at the club on Wednesday, June 25 at 2:30pm. It is requested that all members attend.

THE Indulgence Beauty Salon mixed trips was won by Llew Angus, Arthur Ronaldson and Yvonne Fillis. Dave Banks, Gino Alilovic and Pam Gilson were the runners-up and Irene Filmer, Willie Smith and Tony Smith took the session prize.
Irene Filmer and John Lee won overall in the Video Plus DVD mixed pairs. Dave Banks and Denise Brass were runners-up and Trish Steyn and Rob Lyle were the session winners.

MARGATE BOWLING CLUB
MARTINS Electronics will be sponsoring drawn open trips on the afternoon of June12 with free boerewors rolls afterwards for this inaugural tournament. Winners will receive R600 and three lucky draws of R100 each will take place after the game, but the winners must be present to claim the prize. This will become a regular tournament and Martins Electronics is thanked for its sponsorship.
The next sponsored tournament is the Margate Panelbeater’s men’s 2-4-2 this Friday morning (6th) and the Fruit and Veg City open trips is Friday, June 13. Contact Ian Hutton at 081 3166634 or enter names on notice board entry forms. Visitors are welcome to enter teams.
Draws for the KBA men’s and women’s pairs are posted on relevant notice boards. Good bowling to the MBC teams playing league this Saturday.
The next bingo evening will be held on Wednesday, June 18, in the clubhouse. Bring friends and family for an evening of fun and a fish and chips supper.
Sunday morning bowls are played in mufti and everyone is welcome to come and join in a morning of fun, bowlers and non-bowlers are welcome.

THE Kinsey Trophy was hosted at the Munster Bowling Club last Friday and the trophy was won by the Munster Bowling Club. Overall team winners were Banners Rest C, skipped by Aubrey Hood and Irene Filmer skipped runners-up, Munster B. First session was taken by Munster D, skipped by Hedley Meek, second session was won by Munster A, skipped by Graham Gold and third session went to Port Edward C, skipped by Mac MacKenzie. The board was won by Louise Dry.

THERE was little to report on during the last week, however Yvonne van Mentz and Chris Abram are wished the best of bowling at the Bowls South Africa mixed pairs in Bethlehem from June 11 to 14. Another reminder is that the club is offering a free membership for one year if two new members who are partners join the club, just bring prospective new members to the attention of one of the committee members. Duties from June 9 are Jean Westerman, Joan and Barry Fowler. Members who are unable to perform duties must make arrangements with someone else.

CONGRATULATIONS to Munster as winners of the Kinsey Trophy, with Banners Rest placed second and Port Edward third. Banners Rest C team won the team event.
The Banners Rest men’s pairs played on June 1 was won by Brian Camps and Ally Weir, with runners-up Leigh Warner and Dave Hume. Second session was won by Dave Banks and Dan Delaney, and the 50/50 board went to Jimmy McAllister.
Final rounds of the KBA men’s Saturday league are on June 7 with the Banners Rest first team at home and the fours at Riverside.
The next sponsored competitions are the Tops Port Edward mixed pairs on Friday, June 6, with thanks to catering by Amy Körner, and the year’s major tournament The SuperSpar Port Edward Tri-Club, played over three days at venues Banners Rest, Port Edward and Munster.
Club handicap singles are scheduled for June 14 and 15. Birthday wishes go to Louis La Grange for June 9.

The Glasfit sponsored mixed trips played last Sunday was won by Mike King and Richard and Kitty Cochman, runners-up were Geoff Keleher, Jane Massam and Cosmos Gumede and third place went to Bob Moroney, Jan Bouwer and Martie Human. The Dr Darryl D’Arcy men’s trips was won by Dennis Graham, Eric Grierson and Johnny Meyer, with Johan McLeod, Jan Bouwer and Hennie Greyling as runners-up, and the session prize went to Mike King, Bob Moroney and Richard Cochman.

The Execudec mixed 2-4-2 was won by Sharolyn Dacey and Steve O’Moore, who also won the 50/50, followed by Chris and Di Abram on a count-out from Bill and Nelia Reed. Sessions went to Rosemary Esterhuysen and Hein Bester, and to Norman Isherwood and Val Kirkbright.
The winners of the Martins Electronics men’s 2-4-2 were Tony Simmonds and Bill Reed, followed by Alan Tyers and Brian Hughes. Sessions went to Rennie Geyer and Ronnie Canning and to Oscar Pienaar and Roy Baker. Bob Nelson won the whisky.
The next sponsored competitions at the club are the Hibiscus Retirement Villages’ men’s trips on Tuesday, 10th, the Hibiscus Insurance Brokers’ mixed trips on Thursday, 12th, and the Wingnuts Plumbing mixed 2-4-2 on Monday, June 16. There will be a bring and braai after the RAC draw tomorrow (6th) and the in-house tabs in the Fruit and Veg mixed trips will be held on Saturday, June 7th.

SOUTHBROOM
WHAT a busy four days at the club! Thursday hosted the CrissCross Security open mixed trips, which was won by Aubrey Hood, Steve and Jenny Rennie and runners-up were Malcolm Milne, Nico Mantoan and Viv Date.
First session went to Graham Fisher, Mike Lyall and Julia Moorly, and second session winners were Mike Gamble, Jean Purtell and René Jover. Mal Sheppard took the 50/50. Friday afternoon saw so many ready to compete in the ever-popular Tiago’s 2-4-2 that the competition had to be changed to trips.
Sunday was an entertaining day with the MTN sponsored bowlers’ and golfers’ braai. Ron Weddell had everyone playing a bowlers/cricket, which was so enjoyed by all. Thank you to Coastal Cellular and The Bowls Shop.
The Mariners Restaurant open fours is scheduled for Thursday, June 5, the Nomads bowls competition takes place in Southbroom on Sunday, June 15. The June quiz will take place on Friday, June 15 at 6 for 6.30pm. Bar duty for the week June 9-15: Hans Wijtman.
