STARTING with an eagle, followed by a birdie at the second, Geoff Barrow enjoyed a sensational game at Southbroom last Saturday. Playing an alliance and joined by Bob Thomas, Div Gerringh and Graham Volck, Geoff’s two brilliant holes however were just not quite enough for his fourball to win the competition. They finished on 93, two shots behind the winners, Paul Cole, Richard Derman, Dave Page and Dave Neilson. Third place went to Karl Mosburger, John Lison, Gerard Myers and Gert Graser on 91.
The previous Wednesday’s individual Stableford was won by Gerard Fitzgerald on 42 points on a count out from Dave Neilson and Kerry Fielden. Bob Thomas was fourth on 41 followed by Graham Taylor on 40.
With a field of 29 players, the women also enjoyed an alliance last Saturday. Karen Bridgeford, Helen Hissey, captain Augustine D’Ewes and ‘ghost’ won with 91, a clear two shots from Sandy Luus, Di Morris, Jean Purtell and the same steady playing ‘ghost’ who had done her bit for the winners!
The previous Wednesday’s individual Stableford was won in comfortable fashion by Jeanne Powell on 40 points. Liz Shaw was second with 35 followed by Di Morris on 32, counting out Augustine D’Ewes.

DHEVAN Appalraju caused a major upset in the first round of the Pro-Vision matchplay championships when he ‘demolished’ Pravesh Govender at San Lameer Country Club last Sunday. Mike Pillay had a tough encounter with Anba Pillay, winning his match on the last hole. Krish Kandasamy also edged out Dhevan Moodley to proceed to the second round. At Port Shepstone Country Club where some of the other first round matches were played, Kevin Jeacocks defeated Resheen Goberdan and Rob Calder won his match against Kanai Maharaj.
Members are again reminded that all matchplay games must be completed by the end of June.

MARGATE
LAST Saturday was monthly medal time for everyone at Margate Country Club.
In the men’s competition, sponsored by Hibiscus Retirement Villages Colin Iddon won the A division on nett 71 from Ronnie Mtshaka on 72. B division winner Fanie Terblanche ended on 66, the best overall score of the day. Jim Finn was second with 70 and Richard Plaskitt came in to win the C division with 74 after counting out Michael Downs.
Rene Paton shooting a nett 70, took first place in the women’s competition. Lesley Erasmus was a shot behind on 71 followed by Sandi Johnston on 72 after counting out Chiappini Boshoff.
The monthly business day alliance last Friday, sponsored by Giorgio Express and Margate Pro Shop was won by Frik van Zyl, PC Volschenk, Marius Visser and Johan Erasmus on a tidy 91 points. Angus MacLachlan, Una McLachlan, Neil Townsend and Dennis Reebok were one shot behind on 90 points to be placed second. Jim Finn, Bruce and Derrik Matthew with Erich Vogelsanger were third on 88. The nearest the pin prize for the 16th went to Theuns Esterhuizen.
Thursday’s individual bonus bogey, sponsored by Margate Pro Shop and played in wild, wet and windy conditions, saw many more starters than finishers. Flip Fourie stayed and braved the weather to come in to win on plus 1 after counting out Graham Scowby.
The Wednesday Wobblers alliance was won by Roy Nolan, Jim Finn and Dieter Jucker on 88 points. Andrew Dickerson, Barry Bonet and Dolf Willemse were second on 86 points after counting out Doug Johnston, Otto Mutschler and Hans Dallinger. Ken Norval, Wayne Minnaar and Rob Brien won the Arthur Tomlinson Floater on 67 points.The final of the women’s medal winners saw Evelyn Burl’s score of nett 71 good enough for her to raise the James Bowl trophy. Hilary Hendry was second, one shot behind on 72. The winner of the subsiduary individual Stableford competition, played in tandem with the medal, was Irene Tomlinson with 39 points. Chiappini Bohoff was second on a solid 36 after counting out Jenny Hulley.
