Rugby Warriors leave Dolphins stranded
The team returned victorious, and with a bonus point to boot.
SOUTH Coast Warriors managed a bonus point win over the Ballito Dolphins in sunny conditions at Kings Park 7 in Durban last weekend, despite several senior players being rested.
The Warriors’ team was made up of players from the first, second and third teams. As Ballito had withdrawn their second team from the tournament, it was an excellent opportunity for the Warriors to test the depth of their players.
It also afforded several youngsters and players who have recently rejoined the team a chance to prove themselves worthy of first-team selection.
The team ‘gelled’ well and managed a comfortable 31-3 win, also pocketing a bonus point for having scored four tries.
Tries were scored by Jackson Mqadi, Jurie Geldenhuis and Ettiene Marais, and a penalty try was awarded when the Dolphins collapsed a scrum in front of the posts. All were converted through the boot of Dylan Kroon. The remaining three points came from a penalty 50m out, neatly slotted by Josh Fourie.
Team work was key to the victory. The Warriors’ forwards dominated every aspect of the game upfront and there were some great scrums, mauls and line outs.
The back line defence was rock-solid and the team’s cohesive performance on attack made the try-scoring look easy.
In other results, the Jaguars pulled off a surprise win over Richards Bay, putting Warriors top of the log on 39 points. Richards Bay and Harlequins are both on 35 , but thanks to a better points difference, Richards Bay has squeaked into second place.
The first round of the Ebbo Bastard tournament takes place this weekend.
