THE Margate Country Club’s women’s section open day was held last week, with the format, a betterball medal, incorporating the Edith Bremner Trophy.
Sixty four ladies travelled from as far afield as Prince’s Grant, Kloof, Umhali and Harding to take part.
They were welcomed at the club with a goodie bag, delicious eats and hot drinks. They enjoyed a superb lunch after their game.
Thanks to the generosity of Joe Espach, Status Garrun Insurance, Head Office, Sands International, KIA Weltevreden and the Margate women golfers there was a fabulous array of prizes up for grabs.
The club’s 87 year-old matriarch, Chiappini Boshoff, and her young ’70 something’ partner Hannetjie Pretorius, were victorious in clinching the trophy and brought the entire room to their feet in a standing ovation.
This pair’s admirable nett score of 56 points was four clear of the runners-up Evelyn Burls and Margaret Taylor, who counted out Connie McArthur and Yzelle Greyling.
The Wobblers’ alliance was won by Dave Boyd, Thys Bothma and Frank Stephens on 91 points.
In second place was Ken Norval, with pivots, on 84 points, two ahead of Konnie Konrad, Alan Davies and Dolf Willemse.
The Arthur Tomlinson Floater went to Robert Henning, Otto Mutschler and John Barker on 67 points.
The Thursday comp saw Flip Fourie score 34 points to count out Chris Nel and Patrick Mavundla.
Nearest the pin on the 16th, sponsored by Hibiscus Retirement Villages, was John Crewe.
Guy Yeadon and Derek Ndovela teamed up to return +6 and win last Saturday, by two from Allan Halvorsen and Pops Harrison, as well as Johan Wentzel and Riaan Croucamp.

‘Golden girls’ bow out

THE Port Shepstone Country Club’s women’s section had an amazing morning tea and eats to bid farewell to some of the ‘golden girls’, namely Joan Cheney, Joan Harrison, Estelle Sheppening, Doreen Gibbon and Lorraine Wilkes, who have resigned from the club.
The memories of good times spent playing golf together and socialising in between the golf were the main topics of conversation. The women will cherish the moments that were spent with them.
In regular news Leon Reeders and Kevin Loring won the Wozani golf day, followed by Sbu Ntozakhe and Mot Moleele, and then Gavin van Wyk and Jenny Hulley.
The betterball last Wednesday was won by Mike Pillay and Benny Pillay on nett 64, one ahead of Phil Myburgh and Jacky van Heerden, as well as Leon Reeders and Abrie du Toit.
Cilla Lindsay and Bevis Fairbrother won Saturday’s comp on +11, three clear of Lyn Mol and Graham Dickson, as well as Benny Pillay and Ganes Munsami.

Jason lights up at Southbroom

THE Sanlam Cancer Challenge at Southbroom Golf Club last Saturday saw Jason Ackerman shoot the lights out with a 67 gross to card 41 points.
Malcolm Greenland was next on 39 points, followed by Jannie Ackerman on 36 points.
Karl Mosburger won the B division on 41 points, with Bruce Matthew on 40 points and Coert Brits and Graham Volck both on 38 points.
In the C division Gordon Moody took the laurels on 39 points, with Simon Shusha on 38 points and Art Germs and Alan Woods on 35 points.Gerald Fitzgerald had the shot of the day, an ace at the 4th hole.
In the women’s section, Geraldine Treherne cleaned up on 41 points, with Eileen Neilson the runner-up on 39 points and Rene Matthew in third on 31 points.
Sandy Fitzgerald won the B section on 38 points, with Joy Crutchfield next on 36 points and Karen Asbock in third on 33 points.
In the C section, Liz Shaw took first place on 38 points, with Tammy Murphy second on 29 points and Judy Hofman third on 24 points.
Daniel Wyser and Peter Holmes won last Wednesday’s comp at Southbroom Golf Club on +15, followed by Dave Neilson and Chris Miller on +12, on a countout from Karl Mosburger and Gerald Myers, as well as Roger Hissey and Rick Harding.
In the women’s comp, Mary Carolan and Karen Asbock took first prize on 45 points, with Sandy Fitzgerald and Lorraine Cook next on 44 points, with Di Morris and Ruth Mosburger in third place on 43 points.
Friday’s open day saw Bruce and Rene Matthew and Joy Crutchfield win on 94 points, on a countout from Theuns Esterhuizen, Mike Geiger, Edwin Steyn and Patrick Mavundla.
In third spot on 92 points were Sandy and Gerald Fitzgerald, Janet Humphrey and Dix Vorster.
Nearest the pins were Gary Purtell (4th), Theuns Esterhuizen (8th), Edwin Steyn (11th) and Richard Mills (14th).
Closest for two were Ronnie Mtshaka (5th) and Richard Bridgeford (15th).

Medal time for Pro-Vision

PRO-VISION golf club will hold its seventh annual club champs at Port Shepstone Country Club this Sunday, with tee off times from 8am.The medal competition will have different divisions and the overall winner will be crowned champion.
Ricky Naidoo currently tops the rankings, with Paul Naidoo and Graham Fabricius in second and third place respectively.
Santhos Baskali is the defending champion and returning to top form.

>KOBUS de Lange won the individual Stableford at San Lameer Country Club last Wednesday. He carded 37 points to pip his wife Estelle by one point. Nearest the pin on the 9th was Coen Griesel and Sean Slabbert on the 16th.Longest drives on the 3rd were struck by Rici Hanekom and Sean Slabbert.
