Elvis is on song for Southern KZN

Some thrilling golf under pressure was played.

TWO days after his 40th birthday, Elvis Khawula produced some of his best golf this year to set Southern KwaZulu-Natal golf up for a crucial premier league win over Kloof at Margate Country Club last Sunday.
In the foursomes, he teamed up with David Rush to win 6/5. In the afternoon he dished out a ‘dog licence’ to former South African player Mark Cox (coming out of retirement to play), winning 7/6.
Earlier, the foursomes had been halved, with Jan McDermott and Marc Bormann, roped in at the 11th hour, losing 7/6.
Leorin Pillay and Nishalin Nelson squeezed out a 1-up win, while Gavin Sole and Sean Baker lost 1-down.
In the singles, Rush lost 3/2, while Bormann and McDermott both went all the way to the 18th to produce nerve-wracking halves.
It was impressive stuff from Bormann, who hasn’t played a league match for a number of years now.
Nelson won his game 2/1, while Sole, at the top of the order won easily, beating Kevin Rundle 5/4.
Interestingly, Rundle was coming off an IGT win at Cotswold Downs, where he had defeated the likes of Jared Harvey, Michael Hollick and Colin Nel.
With Baker one down in his game coming down the last, it left Pillay to bring home the winning half point, which he did, but not before providing his teammates a few anxious moments when he raced his birdie putt past the hole on the 18th.
“I thought I needed the win,” he smiled afterwards.
SKZN are now tied with Kloof on log points but are one game point behind. There are two matches left, against Umhlali and Durban CC ‘2’, both away.
