THE KZN First Division South rugby league trophy has returned to the South Coast after eight long years.
Ironically perhaps, the Fidelity Security South Coast Warriors didn’t even need to take to the field.
Unfortunately UKZN were unable to field a front row and so had to hand the game to the Warriors.
Not that they minded too much.
“Everybody was super excited when the news came on Friday afternoon that we had won the league. Although we wanted to celebrate with our loyal supporters with a nice win over UKZN at home, a win is a win and that was all we needed to clinch the league,” said coach Christo Henderson.
Henderson felt that winning the league was the best thing that could have happened to the club at this stage.
“We were in a building phase and worked hard to get the club back to where is was before. There is no better way to do that than by bringing the silverware home. For the players it was a huge achievement, one that can be added on their CV and remembered in the future,” said Henderson.
The Warriors last won this trophy way back in 2006.
“As far as my info goes, captain Juan van den Berg is the only one in our current team who was part of the team of 2006,” said Henderson.
The Warriors’ recipe for success this year was simple: hard work, team work, and belief.
They played 14 games in total, won 12 and lost two. They scored 381 points, conceded 168 (the lowest of any teams in the league).
Now the Warriors have the opportunity to add the cherry on top, with a game against the Newcastle Highlanders (winners of the North Division) at Woodburn Stadium in Pietermaritzburg this Saturday at 2pm.
The winners of this game will be presented with the Dewar Shield.
