Fun and fellowship at polocrosse meet
Organisers of the tournament were thrilled with the support they received.
THE accent was on fun and good sportsmanship at the Paddock Polocrosse Tournament, a friendly competition that saw local players teaming up with visitors to make up teams and players and spectators alike thoroughly enjoying all the horsy action.
The tournament was hosted by the Paddock Polocrosse Club and was held at the Rust Bucket Oribi Engine Museum, adjacent to the Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve. It was the star attraction of the museum’s open weekend last week. The weekend kicked off with a visit from the Thunder Tour, a collection of visiting V8 cars, on the Friday morning – and the mass arrival that evening of 120 players and 160 horses, from 10 clubs, plus a big crowd of supporters. Players came from far and wide to take part and there were even teams from East London. With all the horse boxes, tents and temporary paddocks going up all over the grounds, the Rust Bucket resembled a small village on Saturday morning.
The museum exhibits, ranging from old vehicles, stationary engines and antique farm implements to a quaint rust bucket or two, were all polished up and put on display and the Bucket Bites Kitchen and Cafe and the bar worked overtime to keep everyone fed and watered all weekend.
The on-field action was thrilling, with even tomorrow’s stars, the PeeWees providing non-stop action. For non-players, compere Derrick Classen really added to the fun, explaining in laymen’s terms who was doing what, where and why. After a weekend of his excellent, sometimes humorous commentary visitors were beginning to feel like polocrosse experts. FOR MORE PHOTOS, VISIT OUR GALLERY.
Paddock Polocrosse Club had plenty of reasons to be proud of its players. Stars from the club included Paige Pretorius, who won the women U-23 Bombers Stickwork Trophy, Kenan Classen who won the men’s U-19 Bombers Stickwork Trophy and the ‘D’ Division Best Number Three Player prize, and Amber Pretorius who won the D Division Best Number One Player Prize.
