Warriors charge into semi-finals
The local rugby players got back to winning ways last weekend.
THE Fidelity Security South Coast Warriors had a good weekend, with the firsts and seconds beating Harlequins in Junior Murray Cup quarter-final action at Douglas Mitchell Sports Ground last Saturday.
The firsts won 37-25 while the seconds triumphed 13-10.
The Warriors were beaten 21-12 against premier division club Crusaders the week before.
“We played well, but remember Crusaders ended third in the premier league. We were 21-0 down at the break and outplayed them in the second half. The Crusaders were very impressed with the way the Warriors played and said we deserved to be in the premier league,” said coach Christo Henderson.
Against Harlequins, tries were scored by David van Zyl, Kyle van Deventer, Jacques Petzer-Moore and Chris Mitchell.
Dylan Kroon landed a penalty and a conversion before Arnold Kruger took over kicking duties and struck home three conversions and two penalties.
“We matched them upfront which was an area where we had struggled in previous encounters. We also took our opportunities to score points and our kickers were on target,” said Henderson.
The Warriors never chased the game.
“We were first to convert a penalty and from there we kept the gap to 10 points for most of the game. When they scored, we hit back straight away,” said Henderson.
There were some casualties, with wing/fullback Kroon picking up a knee injury. He will miss the game this coming weekend.
Star flanker Van Deventer needs more rehab on his hip and hamstring.
The Warriors now play the semi-finals against Jaguars at Douglas Mitchell this Saturday.
The seconds kick off at 1.30pm with the firsts after that at 3pm.
Meanwhile, the Warriors golf day will take place at Margate Country Club on Friday, October 10.
It will cost R1000 per fourball (R250 per player). The cost to sponsor a green or a tee box will be R500.
The golf day will be followed by the club’s annual prize-giving dinner year-end function.
The South Coast Warriors Junior Club will open this month.
Players from as young as U9 are invited to join.
Registration will take place at Douglas Mitchell on Monday, August 25, in the evening.
