Gamalakhe Legends lift Mayoral Cup
Stakes were high and the competition fierce in all the games played, soccer and netball.
GAMALAKHE’S Cluster 4, which comprises wards 25, 26, 27 and 28, played exceptionally well to scoop top honours in both the men’s and women’s soccer finals at the Mayoral Cup Tournament held at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre last Sunday.
The men’s team was called the ‘Gamalakhe Legends’ and they beat Gcilima (Cluster 6) 3-1 in the final to collect the floating trophy, gold medals, soccer kit, and prize money of R4 000.
The Gamalakhe women beat their opponents, nicknamed Leeds, 3-0. It was a game that lived up to expectations and fans were not disappointed.
Beauty Ndovela was the top goal scorer in the netball games, while Siyanda Shabane and Sabelo Xolo shared the Golden Boot in the soccer. Zama Nkomo was the highest scorer in women’s soccer, finding the back of the net on 10 occasions.
The Cluster 7 netball team was the only one which managed to overcome the dominance of Gamalakhe at the finals and they won R4 000, a floating trophy, gold medals and a netball kit.
The eight Safa Ugu region soccer referees and the four netball umpires received awards as tokens of appreciation for officiating the games and maintaining a high level of discipline during the process.
Hibiscus Coast Municipality mayor Cynthia Mqwebu congratulated the teams on their successes. “It was wonderful to see your dedication during the games. Thank you to those who took part from the various clusters, and thank you to the various organisers for contributing to the success of the tournament,” she said.
