TO say the Fidelity Security South Coast Warriors were less than pleased with the result of their Junior Murray Cup semi-final clash on Saturday, August 23 would be something of an understatement.
While not wanting to make it sound like sour grapes, coach Christo Henderson said the Warriors had been denied what he felt was a genuine try in their 15-12 loss to Jaguars.
The Warriors were certain captain Juan van den Berg had scored, but the ref declared that the ball had been held up.
“It was a crucial call and it went against us,” said Henderson.
There were tries from Marcell Sass and Lourens Stapelberg. Arnold Kruger knocked over one conversion.
Jaguars scored both their tries before the Warriors managed to dot down. In the last five minutes the Jaguars slotted a penalty to win the game.
Henderson felt the general play had been ‘awesome’. “We smashed them in the scrums and against tough opponents our overall performance was outstanding,” he said.
On the negative side, it was the game in which the Warriors conceded the most penalties all season.
Men of the match were Kyle van Deventer (forwards) and Tienie Viljoen (backs).
For the first team, that’s it for the season.
However, Southern KZN play against Northern KZN at King’s Park and a number of Warriors will be in that team.
Five players, namely Van den Berg (c), Chris Mitchell, Juandré Koekemoer, Ben Oosthuizen and Van Deventer will be playing for the Wildebeest in Kimberley from September 15 to 19.
There was a fantastic response to the Junior Warriors Club formation, with more than 50 boys registering last week.
Looking ahead, the South Coast 7s tournament will be held at the club on February 7 next year.
