The Wild Coast Sun CC made life challenging for the Sunshine Tour players.

BACK in his amateur days, Colin Nel, who hails from Pietermaritzburg, was nicknamed ‘Nellasteros’, for his uncanny ability to produce amazing recovery shots.
However, at the Wild Coast Sun Country Club last week, he needed a level head and a penetrative ball flight to survive in the weather that was dished up.
The Wild Coast is famous for the wind it can whip up, but this was close to ridiculous, especially on day three.
In fact it was so bad that pins were being whipped out of the holes and balls were moving on the putting surface.
There was just no way play could continue and, after about eight holes, play was abandoned.
By that stage Nel had reached the third hole and carded a few bogeys, so this suited him.
He had started the final round with a three shot lead at 10 under par. As a result, the scores after two rounds only were counted and so Nel chalked up a perhaps overdue maiden win.
Jared Harvey and Ulrich van den Bergh tied for second on -7. Margate pro Andrew Curlewis, who was the defending champ, finished nine shots adrift.
The Wild Coast hosts another tournament, the Vodacom Origins of Golf (presented by Samsung), which is to be played from September 3 to 5.

Two in a row for Peppy and co

THE Restoration Cup at Port Shepstone Country Club was won by Doc Bux, Peppy Govender, Pete Govender and Bobby Govender on 195 points over the two days last weekend.
A distant second, on 178 points, were Pat Symcox, Gary Vogt, Craig Lindsay and Cilla Lindsay.
In third spot on 175 points were Piet Fourie, Johan Neethling, Jaco vd Wal and Herb de Beer.

Last Wednesday’s comp was won by Denis Schmidt and Jacky van Heerden on 45 points, by one from Jesse Verster and George Bowie.

Fun times at Southcity day

DESPITE the chilly and strong wind, there was quite a buzz at Southbroom Golf Club for the Southcity Christian School golf day last Friday.
The winners on 97 points were Carl Nolte, Riaan Fourie, Pieter de Bruin and Neil du Plessis.
They counted out Johan Neethling, Jaco van der Wal and A Allen.
In third place on 96 points were Ossie Osborne, Malcolm Greenland, Clive Cunningham and Sean Baker, followed on 95 points by Martin Nagtegaal, Dennis Kockott, Anton Schlebusch and Roelf Craig.
In fifth place were Rob Browne, Gareth Olivant, Jarrod van Wyk and David Rush on 94 points.
Longest drives on the 17th and 18th were smashed by gorillas Rob Cubbin and Errol Rudman repsectively.
Nearest the pins were struck by Gareth Olivant (4th) and Connor James (11th).
The best ‘sloppy putter’ was Dane Adendorff, who mastered the hose-pipe most effectively.
Longest day went to Buck Jones (hauled out of retirement), his son Guy and their teammates Shane and Joe.
Callum McLeod whacked the hockey ball furthest (off the first tee). Rob Browne also delivered a brutal blow, although somewhat off course!
