Success for Simon and Derreck

IN the finals of the Bertie Brown betterball matchplay knockout at Southbroom, Simon and Dereck Shusha managed to have the last say, beating Gerald Fitzgerald and George Haynes three and two.
Last Wednesday the men’s alliance with two scores to count was won by Art Germs, Roel Germs, Colin Steyn and George Haswell on 103. Richard Bridgeford, Norman Jeffrey, Jonathan Shaw and Chris Miller were second on 90 points. Arthur Lee had the only two club. Saturday’s betterball medal was won by Erwin Schanda and Cecil Begley on 58, one shot ahead of George Haswell and Colin Steyn. Joe Carolan and Jonathan Shaw were third on 60 after a count out.
The women’s fourball alliance with two scores to count was won by Michelle Davies, Michelle van der Hoek, Shirley Jeffrey and Ruth Mosburger with 80 points followed by Augi D’Ewes, Sandy Fitzgerald, Jeanne Powell and Allyson Thomas on 78. Ruth Mosburger and Jeanne Powell teamed up to win Saturday’s betterball medal competition on 65. Jeannette Peyios and Jean Purtell were second on 68 after a count out.

Steady golf despite the wind

MARGATE Country Club stalwart Margaret Ford played ‘nice and steady’ to win the women’s individual Stableford last Tuesday on 37 points. Wondra Bothma was second on 36.
Rod O’Farrell, Derek Egerton and Freddie Boshoff took first place in the Wednesday Wobblers’ threeball alliance with 91 points. Dolf Willemse, Piet Pretorius and John Gibson were second on 86. The Arthur Tomlinson Floater went home with Ken Norval, Jim Finn and Karl Zurfluh who scored 68 points.
Thursday’s individual Stableford sponsored by Hibiscus Retirement Villages was won by Piet Ludick on 39 points, one shot ahead of Gary Smith. Nearest the pin at the 16th went to Fanie Terblanche.
The business day alliance sponsored by Giorgio Express Panelbeaters was won by Frik van Zyl, Johan Erasmus, Marius Visser and Dries Barkhuizen on 91 points on a count out from Colin Williamson, Beryl Williamson, Evelyn Burls and Rina Rito. Richard Plaskitt, Piet Ludick, Norman Bridger and Rob McArthur were third on 90 points.
Saturday’s individual Stableford was won by Alan Davies on 39 points on a count out from Jim Finn, Anton Kohrmann and Deon Meyer.

Wild win for De Jager
>
LOUIS de Jager overcame a triple-bogey start on his way to a 77 and then a play-off to win his second title on the Sunshine Tour in the Vodacom Origins of Golf presented by Samsung at the Wild Coast Sun Country Club last Friday.
De Jager was five shots clear of the field at the start of the round. But he had to weather a difficult start and gusting winds before winning a three-way play-off with a par on the 18th.
“That was the first play-off of my career so I didn’t know what to expect, but I think that helped me in the end,” said De Jager.
But it required all of the mental strength he could muster. De Jager did well to compose himself after a difficult front nine where he saw his five-shot lead cut to two when he triple-bogeyed the first and double-bogeyed the fifth amidst two birdies on the second and ninth holes.
He had some breathing space early on the back nine, but finishing with five consecutive bogeys dropped into a tie with Jaco Ahlers and Haydn Porteous on two under.
“I just kept my head and stuck to my game-plan and it worked out in the end.”
This is his first win since his maiden triumph in the 2009 Suncoast Classic further up the coast at Durban CC.

Ken and Paul play steady

LAST Wednesday’s combined Stableford at Port Shepstone Country Club was won by Ken Morris and Paul Geoffrey on 74 points. Dennis Schmidt and Greg Hornby were second on 69.
The A division of the Auto Exec Monthly Mug played last Saturday was won by Jesse Verster on 69 nett. Ricky Naidoo won the B division on 68 and Dave Milne won the C division on 69 oco. Best gross went to Jesse Verster with 72. Charles Mostert was the mug winner on 68 oco.
There will be the business day this Friday, at a cost of R140 per player and on Sunday, the club will host the Bullslingers’ Day.
