THE annual Pro Deo Cycle Tour got under way from Vereeniging this morning (Wednesday).
On Tuesday this week the cyclists stopped in at Dura Cycles in Margate for a chat and pep talk before continuing north.
The cyclists are currently riding back to the South Coast and will finish up at Southbroom Golf Club this Sunday, September 21 at roughly noon. The public is more than welcome to attend and cheer the riders home. A tasty ‘hook and vine’ meal will be served at the club, costing R120.
The intention is to raise funds for the Pro-Deo group, which is part of the Margate Dutch Reformed Church. The group helps to care for the elderly and sick in the area
* In other cycling news, Candice Neethling of Oribi won the 100km Hill2Hill MTB Marathon from Hilton to Hillcrest last Sunday. This time around she opted for a more conservative strategy so as not to over-exert herself on the hills.
She said she had taken strain in the past towards the end of races, so set out a lot more slowly in this race. It worked and she won. Candice finished in a time of 4;21:09. Hayley Smith of Uvongo was fourth in 4:39:48.
The men’s race was won by James Reid in a time of 3:38:48.
