Cyclists raise funds for charity
The cyclists raised a hefty sum of money for the Pro Deo Care Group.
THE Pro Deo Cycle Tour was indeed a lucrative one this year. Ten cyclist friends completed the 860km trip from Johannesburg to Margate in four days.
The challenge began last week Wednesday and ended on Sunday. A sum of R110 000 was raised for the Pro Deo Care Group, which cares for sick and elderly people of the lower South Coast who cannot afford medical care.
A lunch was held at Southbroom Golf Club last Sunday to welcome the cyclists. There was much excitement at the finish line, as family and friends waited in anticipation for the cyclists to arrive.
Chairman of the Pro Deo group, Ronel Steyn said that with the deterioration in medical care and pension funds, home care as an organised activity has become a necessity.
“Unfortunately funds are limited and it is only dedicated people, such as the cycling group, that makes it possible for the volunteers to supply the necessary care that the elderly and sick require,” she said.
She added that the Pro Deo Care Group cannot thank the cyclists enough for what they have done in the past and for what they plan to do in the future.
Money raised from the cycle challenge will be used to purchase wheelchairs, pulpit walkers, bath chairs and other items that are much needed. Funds will also be used to purchase medical apparatus.
