THE Lake Eland Quattro Classic, powered by The Burry Stander Foundation, will be held at Lake Eland this Sunday, September 28, from 9am.
Burry’s mother, Mandie, felt it was an event that could grow and boost tourism on the coast. Further, she said that to honour Burry’s legacy, the family had opened the Burry Stander Bike Park, on the St Faiths road, in January this year.
“We are trying to create a safer environment for cyclists and so far it has been a huge success. We have South Coasters using the park all the time. We also have a ‘development’ team of six that will be doing their fifth race this Sunday, so that’s exciting to watch. So far this year we have hosted about 150 underprivileged children, teaching them to ride a bicycle, giving them a meal and just letting them enjoy time in a safe environment,” said Mandie.
Special Burry Stander memorial medals will be given to each cyclist, plus goodie bags, and trophies and prize money for the winners. There will also be lucky draw prizes. Register online at ROAG or on the day.
There will be races over 10km, 25km and 45km. Pre-entry will cost R60, R130 and R170 for the three respective distances, and late entries will cost R20 more for each respective race. Late entries on the day will be accepted between 7am and 9am.
