SOUTH Coast Association of Radio Flyers recently had a super ‘Float Fly Day’ at Eric Dunston’s farm in Oribi, enjoying the open air with a lovely view. Members flew their float planes, boats, jets, gliders and hex copters.
Kevin McGovern flew his Icon and Adi Critten maidened his Carbon Z Cup on floats. After a period of more than ten years, Albert van Eeden got his stick and Piper cub going again on floats. Dean Ferguson flew his stick, Dennis Steenmans maidened his electric-powered Macchi, Evert Bezuidenhout flew his stick and Dennis flew his Cessna.
Mike du Mollard got his ‘Big Stick’ going again after adding some lead. Mike and Dennis began flying in formation and gave the spectators a thrill until Dennis went straight and Mike turned, which caused a big mid-air crash with pieces of planes coming down.
Although it was a chance in a million, everyone was a bit shaken, especially after the stick landed close to the girls fishing on the other side. After Martin Fourie’s little one Josh picked up all the pieces, it was evident that both planes were a write-off, but Dennis and Mike took the news in good spirits.
