Rugby players are recognised

MARGATE Sports School was the venue for the Fidelity South Coast Warriors Rugby Club’s annual prize-giving last Friday.

Kyle van Deventer walked off with the player of the year and players’ player of the year trophies. This star player said that he was really privileged to have been recognised for these awards.

“I started playing rugby with the Warriors at the beginning of this season and I have really enjoyed it. It has been the most enjoyable year of my life playing rugby and I will definitely see the boys again next year,” he said.

Jurie Geldenhuys won the stirrer of the year award.

Best new player of the year award went to Graeme Massey while Juandre Koekemoer was recognised as the most promising player at the club.

Tienie Viljoen was the best defender of the year.

Christo Henderson, Warriors first team coach, won the club man of the year award. He said that with the history associated with this award, it was a huge honour receiving it.

“If you see the spirit of the players tonight, you will notice that we all worked towards a common goal and we achieved it,” he said.

Club officials also took the opportunity to acknowledge sponsors committed to the club cause. The club’s main sponsors were Juno Fourie of Fidelity Security, Neil Syren of County Ford, Gerhard Steyn of Status Panelbeaters and Natasha Becker of Nashua South Coast.

Chairman, Boet Fourie said that this was one of the best years that the club has ever had. “I played for this club many years ago and they were some of the most wonderful years of my life. The turnaround in the great rugby played this year is due to excellent coaching, the encouragement our players received and not importing players but utilising our local players,” said Mr Fourie. “We also bettered our skills and game plan.”
