Souties rule at Margate
The annual Boertjies vs Souties clash was a hard-fought affair.
EVERY year, the members of Margate Country Club relive some of the historic clashes of the past, with an Anglo-Boer ‘war’ on the golf course. The Souties triumphed this year, much to the delight of all its ‘soldiers.’
‘Weapons’ came in the form of clubs, so there were no cannons or rifles around, just a lot of ‘friendly fierceness’.
Souties’ captain John Ford said that it was all great fun, of course, with members from both sides dressing the part.
It was played as a betterball and best score on the day was produced by Fanie Terblanche and Flip Fourie on 49 points.
In second spot on 47 points were Arthur Ehlert and Albert Sweetman, followed by Johan Wentzel and Riaan Croucamp on 46 points, tied with Jim Finn and Alan Davies.
However, the overall match result saw Souties score 935 points to the Boertjies 932 points, so it was very close.
Nearest the pins were won by Julie Gerber (2nd), Thys de Bruin (4th), John Ford (8th), Sandi Johnston (16th).
Meanwhile, the previous Tuesday’s comp was won by Hilary Hendry, Margaret Ford, Beryl Williamson and Janet Dowling on 93 points.
In second place were Hester Gasson, Anita Scheepers, Kay Young and Lynn Meek on 89 points.
The Wobblers’ alliance saw Keith Duncalf, Peter Rogers and Fred Boshoff take the laurels on 81 points, two ahead of Tony Peace, Frank Merrill and Piet Pretorius.
The Arthur Tomlinson Floater went to Jim Finn, Hans Beilhartz and Dave Morrison on 74 points.
The weather was not good, wet and windy, and the field thus depleted. The only ones to play were the ones not keen on shopping.
Thursday’s comp was won by Derek Egerton on 46 points, with Alan Davies on 42 points and Norman Bridger on 38 points.
Nearest the pins were won by Jim Finn (2nd) and Derek Egerton (16th).
