IF you see a little ‘kid’, wearing very fancy cycling kit, riding with an overweight ‘old man’ heading to or from Tweni beach, very early in the morning, or riding out on the farms, give the little guy a wave or a hoot.
Don’t worry too much about the dad.
Cycling and training is hard work and Nicholas de Bruin will enjoy the support and encouragement.
His father Darren is just trying to keep up.
Nicholas has completed a successful year on the bike, with numerous trophies to show for it.
He is the KZN U10 time trial and road cycling champion. At the South African Road Cycling Champs, he came third in the U10 time trial and won the road race.
He is the overall South African U10 road cycling champ.
On the mountain bike, in the Nipper age group, he won the KZN Provincial Cross-country champs.
He duly won the KZN Provincial cross-country series and also the Spur KZN School Mountain Bike Series.
He also won the first round of the South African Cross-country Cup Series and came third at the South African Cross-country Mountain Bike Championships.
Nicholas also competed in the KZN ROAG series, which consists of a number of races over a longer distance than the cross-country races. His races were between 20km and 30km.
The last race was recently at Mountain Splendour in the Drakensberg, very close to Champagne Sports Resort.
He did very well in the series (the winner was only decided at the last race) and he clinched the series by winning his age group.
Nicholas will also receive his KZN provincial colours for mountain biking.
Darren said it had been a long year for the ‘Pocket Rocket’. He may have been meaning himself!
“I look forward to some slower riding with him over the festive season – like that’s going to happen,” he laughed.
Darren thanked Mohammed Haffajee, as well as Charles and Mandie Stander for their support during the year. “The help, advice and support they have given Nicholas during the year have been amazing,” he said.
