New green … and some night golf

Driving in the dark took on a new meaning last weekend.

MARGATE Country Club golfers now have no excuse to miss putts, seeing as the newly revamped putting green has been officially opened.
This was done last Saturday evening, by new captain Doug Johnston.
There was a nine hole putting competition, which saw a tie between Dereck Hirson and Juan Dixon, both with 15 putts for the nine holes.
The play-off had to be delayed as the players ran out of light.
Once the course was dark enough, a three hole night golf competition took place, using three special short holes, each with an average length of 120m.
There were fluorescent flagsticks and luminous golf balls provided courtesy of Margate Pro Shop.
The competition was won by Joan Minnaar.
Thanks to all the members and guests who took part and Margate’s staff who helped to create an enjoyable evening.

Ricky is no mug

PAUL Bunge and Dave Milne won the competition at Port Shepstone Country Club last Wednesday.
They carded 47 points to edge out Rolly Shaw and Jacky van Heerden who had 46 points.
The Auto Exec monthly mug was played last Saturday.
The overall winner was Ricky Naidoo on nett 63.
Division winners were Phil Myburgh (A division, nett 68), Roy Matkovich (B division, nett 66), Charles Hulley (C division, nett 67).
Phil also had the best gross, a well played 75.
Thys le Roux won the Stableford division on 39 points.

Newcomers clean up in style

NEW members Darren and Scott Ovenstone teamed up with Andrew Thompson and Josh Billington to win the comp at Southbroom Golf Club last Saturday on 96 points.
In second place on 91 points were Gerald Fitzgerald, Bob Clark, Simon Shusha and Clive Wood.
There was a three-way tie on 90 points, shared by Jannie Ackerman, Jason Ackerman, Russel Mackenzie and Gus Bonini; Rob Meydell, Joe Carolan, Rob Williams and Barry Stott; and Derrik Matthew, Bruce Matthew, Norman Farrell and Les Civin. Roger Hissey had three two-clubs.
The women’s section was won by Ruth Mosburger, Lorraine Cook, Mary Carolan and Geraldine Treherne on 101 points.
In second place on 89 points were Pam Quarmby, Eileen Neilson, Judy Hofman and Jenny Westray, followed on 87 points by Janet Humphrey, Jean Purtell, Margi Bonini and Joy Crutchfield.
John Scott won the previous Wednesday’s comp on 44 points, followed by Bruce Matthew and Derek James (gross 63) on 43 points.The talk was that Derek was ‘on fire’ and was looking at breaking 60 at one point. Maybe next time.
Jim Cook and Malcolm Greenland had 42 points. Two-clubs were aplenty, with Derek James having two (no surprise) and Wally Robinson also having two (surprise).
Karin Asbock won the women’s comp on 42 points, well clear of Irene Schanda on 37 points.
Eileen Neilson had 36 points. Margi Bonini and Margie Sherratt both had 35 points.
