DERRIK and Rene Matthew won the JD Spooner Rose Bowl mixed greensomes, sometimes referred to as the gruesome greensomes, at Southbroom Golf Club last Sunday.
They carded nett 67 (yes, it’s medal) to edge out Garth Strong and Sandra Luus, who had 67,2.
In third place were Erwin and Irene Schanda on nett 70,4 followed by pro Derek James and his daughter Courtney on nett 71,2.

Melissa makes it to final stage
MELISSA Eaton of Port Shepstone joined fellow South Africans Nicole Garcia, Monique Smit and Francesca Cuturi in making the field for the final stage of the 2015 Ladies European Tour qualifying school in Morocco next week.
The 72 hole event was played at the Red Course Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in Morocco.
Symetra Tour winner Melissa relocated back to SA after years in the United States.
The Sheppie player impressed in her first start back on home soil with a tie for 30th in the Cell C SA Women’s Open at San Lameer.
She got her campaign off to a great start when she aced the par-three 11th with a five-iron on her way to an opening 79.
She navigated the Robert Trent Jones designed Red Course in further rounds of 73, 79 and 76 to tie for 11th.The final stage will be held at the Samanah and Al Maaden courses in Marrakech from December 17 to 21.
The top 30 and ties will be offered category 8a membership that will guarantee them starts in the majority of tournaments on the 2015 LET.

Curly finishes year on a high
ANDREW Curlewis found some serious game during the Alfred Dunhill Championships at Leopard Creek last week.
He rounded off the year with a top 20 finish at a course some players described as ‘seriously tough’.
In the end he tied for 16th with rounds of 72, 67, 74 and 70.
He was back at work in the Margate CC pro shop the next day, and was already looking forward to the SA Open at Glendower in January.
He said the course was extremely demanding. “If you lose focus for a second, it’s going to hammer you,” he said.
“I’ve always played nicely there and it was great to finish the year on high,” he said.
