Day 12: Ireland’s late charge too good for UAE

You can't keep a good man down.

KEVIN O’Brien played another ‘rapid-fast’ innings that mattered.

Four years he belted the English around the park to score a scintillating and match-winning century.

Today, against the United Arab Emirates, he flayed eight fours and two sixes to score 50 at a strike rate of 200.

Together with the Gary Wilson, who smashed 80, they got Ireland to the line but not quite over it.

Batsmen 9 and 10 were left with that honour, with four balls to spare.

UAE scored 278/9 with Shaiman Anwar cracking 106 runs.

Ireland was 171/5 when O’Brien strolled out to rescue his team.

The win keeps Ireland very much in the hunt for a quarter-final place, especially if West Indies lose against South Africa on Friday.

At least the Proteas will be assured of some Irish support when that game gets under way.
