Day 13: Afghani-stun Scotland

Scotland's wait for a World Cup match win continues.

YOU have to admit that watching the minnows battle it out can be almost as fun as watching two heavyweights go hell-for-leather.

This time around it was Afghanistan who produced something miraculous to snatch victory from the jaws of salivating Scotland.

The Scottish batted first and made 210/10.

Afghanistan started well but then just about completely lost their way, losing seven wickets with only 97 runs on the board.

They produced arguably the oddest looking scorecard in recent time. Only four players made double figures, including numbers 10 and 11.

It took a guy with a name that sounds like a game reserve in South Africa to deliver the heroic deed – Samiullah Shenwari.

With him at the crease there was always hope. Boy, did he deliver, smoting three 6s towards the end, before holing out for 96.

The tip of the tail wagged sufficiently making 21*, with number 10 and 11 at the crease, to get them to victory, sparking well-deserved celebrations from a nation that barely had a team a decade ago.

In the late game Sri Lanka completely outplayed Bangladesh, snuffing out any chance of any so-called upset. Sri Lanka also sent a warning that the boys in dark blue are not to be taken lightly.

Sri Lanka made 332/1 with Bangladesh managing only 240 in return.

The next game, tomorrow, sees South Africa play the West Indies at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The Proteas will be without Vernon Philander and JP Duminy, both nursing injuries, according to reports.

The match starts at 5.30am SA time.
