Update: Durban says ‘no money’ for Top Gear

The motoring extravaganza will be staged in Johannesburg this year.

THE news that against all expectations, the popular Top Gear Festival will not be coming to Durban this year has left upset fans wondering why.

The Mercury in January reported that deputy mayor and chairman of eThekwini metro’s economic development and planning committee Nomvuzo Shabalala had told the committee that the city did not have money for the event.

According to a report on the IOL website, at the time, Shabalala said: “I forgot to mention that we don’t have money for Top Gear. We don’t have it… It happens in June. Also, the World Routes Forum in September. Those are big events and we need the money.”
