Weekend wrap: Another loss but not end of the world

Ironically, the loss did not affect SA's position in the Pool B log.

THERE has been significant progress in the Cricket World Cup since Friday.

The quarter-final berths looked pretty much sealed, with the only big question mark that over England and Bangladesh (currently on the go).

South Africa’s loss to Pakistand was obviously not pleasing, especially because of the manner in which the batting folded in a not-very-tight chase.

Yes, Pakistan have some very good left-arm quicks, but that score should have been reached.

What was worrying was AB de Villiers’s comment afterwards that “there was no electricity or vibe” or words to that effect.

What on earth does that mean? How can a national cricketer not “get up” for a World Cup game.

As a casual observer/couch critic, it is because India had already beaten the West Indies the day before.

This meant that even if SA won, they could still only finish second in the pool. Even if they lost, they would still remain second. Almost a dead rubber. That’s my theory.

Of course, I could be wrong. There could be major discord in the camp – but that seems hugely unlikely.

So although a player is trying his hardest, he just isn’t. That edge isn’t there.

But AB seemed miffed. That’s the closest we have seen him to losing his cool. Even presenter Ramiz Raja caught a bit of AB’s irritation, with AB gently correcting him on a fact.

I hope he reads the team the riot act. Something like this: “Boys, I want this World Cup and am going to win it on my own if I have to. Anyone who wants it to, come and stand next to me!”

No one can fault him. He has made runs, taken catches, brought about run out, heck, even taken wickets!

A captain does have to be inspirational to lead his team to such a big victory.

AB can do it. Without a doubt.

So looking ahead…

Looks like we will play Sri Lanka in the quarter-finals after their loss to Australia.

That’s ok. Nothing too scary in the bowling line-up except an ageing Lasith Malinga.

Let’s leave it at that for now.

In the meantime we need a big win against UAE on Thursday, with Quinton de Kock hopefully among the runs.

Possible quarter-finalists:

New Zealand vs West Indies

South Africa vs Sri Lanka

Australia vs Pakistan

India vs England
