WORLD golfing icons often emerge from university leagues and there might just be one of them playing right under our noses at the Port Shepstone Country Club as you read this.
About 100 top players from universities from around the country have taken over the local course for the entire week to contest the annual University Sports SA Championships.
Reinhardt Blaaw (67 points) from University of Pretoria dominated the stroke-play for the first half of the week and, with the help of Marc Loubser (72) and Ryan Lane (73), Tuks has taken a commanding overall lead on 212. They are defending their title.
Their closest rivals are Nelson Mandela Metro on 217.
Other in-form players to look out for are ABW van Zyl (Free State Tech) and Stefan Taylor (University of the North West) who both carded 69s in the strokeplay.
But things could change as the teams go into matchplay for the second half of the week.
Knocking on the door are teams Stellenbosch on 218, FS Tech on 220 and Varsity College on 221.
Bringing up the rear are the fun bunch from the University of Zululand on 261.
The Port Shepstone course is closed for other golfers for the week, but spectators are most welcome.
The prize-giving will be at the Kapenta Bay Hotel on Friday evening, but the club is hoping the students will head back to Sheppie in the evening for live music and festivities open to everyone.
