Hot stuff at radio control racing
The club hosted an exciting race event on Father's Day.
WINTER is here, but that hasn’t stopped radio control racing on the South Coast from hotting up.
The Banana County Radio Control Racing Club held a most successful race event at Douglas Mitchell recently.
There were 31 entries in four different classes, starting with 1/8 Electric Buggy with Akshay Patel, from Durban, dominating this class.
Not far behind were local drivers Nimrod Maritz, Rowan Brink and Jagger Virasamy. Akshay started on pole position and stayed ahead for the whole 10 minutes of the race. Jagger managed to pass Nimrod to take second place. Nimrod had to be happy with third position.
Young Vihan Vadachalam’s racing is improving at each meeting and he deserved the prize for most improved driver.
In 1/8 Nitro Truggy, Jason Raath, from Pietermaritzburg, lapped the whole field a few times in the 30 minute final. Brendon van Staden, from Johannesburg, finished in second position with local racer Herman Pieterse in third.
Herman surprised everyone, as, not having a competition car, he finished the final with his Savage. Impressive! In Short Course Truck, Akshay took honours with Nimrod not far behind and Francois de Jager finishing in third place.
The most exciting class was the 1/8 Nitro Buggy final over 30 minutes. Dean Steenmans dominated and has shown that he still has that magical touch. Akshay finished second and Willem Steenkamp third. Young Yash Naicker finished in a well-deserved fourth place.
The club welcomes two new members, Hendrik Reyneke and Chris Geldenhuys. Members are reminded that the club will host on-road racing this Friday, July 3 at Douglas Mitchell Sports Club at 6pm.
Sunday, July 12 at 2pm, the club will host an Off-Road Radio Control Race at the Lions’ Show at the Port Shepstone Country Club, on a custom-made track. Cash prizes for first five positions and for best junior are up for grabs.
