Veterans host tennis tournament
The tournament also attracted players from outside the South Coast.
THERE was a good turnout for the Veterans’ KwaZulu-Natal tennis tournament held at the Uvongo Tennis Club over the weekend.
There were 48 entries and, with this year’s theme, names were from comedy series. Some of the the players were from as far afield as Durban and even Richards Bay.
In the A section finals Team Rene Artois from ‘Allo beat Gomez from The Adams Family by 79 games to 56.
The Rene Artois team comprised Gevaar Nompuku, John Bozas, Johan Hamman, Rob Mutch, Rob Browne and Bongumusa Khumalo.
In the B Section Team Lurch (Adams Family) beat Team Sheldon Cooper (The Big Bang Theory) by 68 to 66 in a very close and tough final.
Team Lurch comprised David Vincent, who is the president of KZN seniors’ tennis, Karin Rall, Lynne Butlin, Meagan Lowe, Lynette Shell and Theo Henning.
Ronel Botha brought a lot of personality into the games and, if there had been a trophy for the most competitive player, she would have won it hands down.
The tournament was well organised and all the players commented on the lovely facility, renovated with funds donated by the president, Brian Danckwerts.
