KINGFISHER BOWLING ASSOCIATION

Masterful bowls on the menu

WELL done and good luck to the players selected to play in the KBA Masters at Margate BC this weekend. Please come and support your club’s players in the season’s premier tournament.

The women competing are Tina Barbour, Ellen Cawker, Pam Cole-Cook, Jessica Henderson, Ronita Kalil, Maureen Muller, Helen Proctor, Heather Roberts, Daphne Sapsford, Johannie Theron, Helen Turk and Dora Vosloo.

The men are Barry Delvin, Eddie Fann, Ross Ferguson, Keith Harcombe, Ashley Jacobs, Shane Nienaber, Barry Payn, Athol Robertson, Mark Smith, Peet van Rooyen, Louw Vermeulen, Ron Weddell and Roy Anderson (reserve).

A reminder for the special meeting at Margate BC on Monday, October 5 at 9.30am, followed by the AGM.

 

MARGATE BC

WINNERS of the Uvongo Spar Open 2-4-2 played last Friday were Shane Nienaber and Franci Philpott. Runners-up were Mike and Sandy Jeffrey.

Sessions went to Alan and Alison Dinning, and Manny Rodrigues and Kate Stewart.

There will be no tabs in during the KBA Masters this weekend.

Anyone interested in making themselves available for the Saturday Leagues should enter their names on the relevant lists on the notice boards.

It was great to see Eleanor Chamier at the Club on Saturday and look forward to seeing her back on the green shortly.

Office duty – James Mitchell; tea duty – Barbara Iceton and Brenda Smith.

 

MARGATE CC

THERE was a magnificent turnout for the Shelly Beach SuperSpar Open Trips, with 14 teams playing. A big thanks to Margate BC for the last minute adjustment from 12 to 14 teams.

Annette Payne and her team were triumphant, but this time with Eileen Abel joining Annette and Trevor Heywood. Runners-up were Rassie Erasmus, Georgie McKechnie, and Sandy Fergusson.

Session Prize went to Bill Brown, Barry Herbert and Dawn Oehley. Dina van der Walt was the lucky 50/50 draw winner.

There will be no men’s trips next Tuesday. Congratulations Kobie Stander, Helen Proctor and Dora Vosloo on being selected to represent the district.

 

PORT EDWARD

THE annual prize-giving will take place this Saturday, October 3 at 4pm. A light meal will be provided by the club.

Jokkie van Buuren is very satisfied with the way the green is progressing.

Well done to Barry Payn, Greg Fifield, Mike Gower and Rob Lyle, who came second against 28 teams at Kokstad.

Remember the social this Friday, See you there.

 

PORT SHEPSTONE

HERITAGE bowls was held last Thursday, with eight teams playing trips.

Winners were Geoff Hudson, Laura Hudson (playing in her first competitive game) and Sharon Bischoff.

Runners-up were Jonny Guy, Bernie Sinclair and Caroline Harris.

Glen Douglass won the most touches with nine, despite being in a losing team.

 

RIVERSIDE

FOOD Lover’s Market 2-4-2 won by Joan and Brian Muir, followed by Heather Flyng and Ray Visser.

Sessions went to Yvonne and Trevor Anderson, as well as Sharon Smith and Barry Herbert.

Next sponsored competition is Hopdens Spar Open Trips on October 8, tabs in.

Sarah’s Kitchen, delicious home-cooked two-course meals can be enjoyed at the club or taken home. R60pp, contact Sarah at 083 7467955.

 

SOUTHBROOM

CONGRATULATIONS to the winners of the Wolf Security Open Trips, namely Heather Roberts, Mal Sheppard and Christine Faber.

Runners-up were Aubrey Hood, Glen Allen and John Keppler.

Sessions went to Dereck Schorn, Hazel Burton and Manny Piquito, as well as Graham Fisher, Val Kirkbright and Julia Moorley. 50/50 to Monika Zunker.

The Fazenda Restaurant 2-4-2 played last Friday was won by Lorraine Cook and Brent Addison.

A successful bowls and braai was held last Sunday to mark the end of the bowling season. Greens will be closed until further notice.

Members are sad to hear of the death of Hugh Purtell, a long time player and member of the club.

 

SOUTHPORT

MEMBERS commented on the spruced up clubhouse and environment, as much painting and cleaning had taken place during the recess.

The volunteers who had completed this work were thanked by the president. The green appeared lush but played a little heavy in some players’ opinions.

The Fruit & Veg mixed pairs in house 2-4-2 played recently was won by Sheugnet Pretorius and Richard Cochman with Bob MacFarlane and Sandy Shepherd runners-up.

The Dr D’Arcy men’s trips was won by Mike King, Bob Moroney and Nellis Hattingh with Renier van Tonder, Don Russouw and Richard Cochman runners-up.

Second session went to Brian Marriott, Arthur Lopez and Fanie Strydom.

The Geochem Mixed Trips was won by Geoff Kelleher, Jane Massam and Cosmos Gumede, with runners-up Renier van Tonder, Don Russouw and Shirley de Bruin.

The Interclub Men’s Fours takes place all day today (Thursday) and involves three teams from each of Margate, The Bell, Riverside and ourselves.

 

THE BELL

WINNERS of the mixed trips played last Friday were Daphne Sapsford, Mada Lindeque and Charles Murgatroyd.

Runners-up were Kieron Dacey, Patricia Maggs and Steve O’Moore. Second session went to Tickey and Denise Nell with Joey Cordier.

Congratulations to Johannie Theron, Daphne Sapsford, Maureen Muller, Mada Lindeque, Sharolyn Dacey, Tina Barbour, Maureen Head, Susan Fourie, Sandy van Niekerk and Michelle Vermeulen who have all been selected for the district squad.

Lists are on the board for KBA Sevens and Saturday Leagues, club drawn women’s and men’s fours. A list for members wishing to purchase the bowling diary is also on the board.

The teams selected to play in the Southport Ladies’ Friendship Day on October 8 are also listed on the board.

 

UMTENTWENI

THE newly sponsored Wimpy women’s pairs played last Thursday was won by Astrid Jackson and Nellie Davies.

Runners-up were Barbara Fernihoud and Susan Fourie. Session prize went to Adele Reader and Val Boshof who, in the process, got a coveted ‘8’.

An eventful weekend started on Saturday with some really exciting bowls in the finals of the club women’s drawn pairs won by Mollie Williams and Tammy Gibbons from Anne Payne and Ruth Findlay.

The men’s drawn pairs final was won by Jacques Snyman and Tony Aveyard from Peter Clark and Peter Marsh.

This was followed by a fun walk and breakfast on Sunday, enjoyed by all.

The next competitions are the Harbour View SuperSpar mixed pairs this Friday and the South Coast Herald men’s pairs next Tuesday.

 

VILLAGE

ALL members, please give your names to Hazel if you are available to play in the Sevens League from November 2 to 6, and also for the Saturday League starting November 14.

Saturday will be one game only a day for the men and two games of 2-bowl trips for the women – same as last year.

Please watch noticeboards around the village for any updates on the club.

 

HIBBERDENE

JOHN Mett, Heather and Dirk Grable won the Re/Max mixed trips played last Friday afternoon. Runners-up were Bez and Bubbles Bezuidenhout with Pauline Howle. Session prize was won by Jan and Joey Venter and Bill Enkerwitz. Thanks to Pat Symcox and Re/Max for the generous sponsorship.

The green will be closed from now but there are various activities on some Thursday afternoons/evenings.
