Round robin fun for tennis players

SOUTHBROOM Tennis Club held its spring round robin last Sunday.

Conditions were hot and windy, but it was a fun-filled afternoon of tennis with some closely contested rallies.

Helen Bam made the most delicious sarmies, which satisfied the appetites of the hungry players.

Congratulations to the winners and runners-up.

Rolf Gudegast won the men’s section, with Ron Stirling the runner-up.

Luise Mohr was the women’s winner, with Mary Rawlins and Pippa Bromley-Gans sharing the runner-up prize.

Winners received vouchers sponsored by The Waffle House, thank you Pauline Lee.

Members please diarise the following events.

The Christmas function will be held at the Bam’s home in Southbroom on Friday, November 27.

The final round robin of the year will be on Sunday, November 29.

Party animals, just remember that you need to be on the courts playing your best tennis – and you only have two days in which to recover.

Good turnout at Tweni

Umtentweni Tennis Club enjoyed a good turnout of four courts last Saturday, despite very strong wind, which thankfully abated later in the afternoon.

Thanks go to Ann Payn for doing duty and supplying lovely sandwiches and cake for tea.

Members were pleased to have Raj Naganna and Lynne Rorich back from Cape Town, and to see Rob Browne, Matt Holmes (playing so well!) and Mervyn Tarboton on our Saturday courts.

Jean Marx had a fall on court last Wednesday and though a little bruised and battered is doing well but will be off tennis for a week or two.

Members were sad to learn that Sharon who works at the club was robbed of her handbag, cash, cellphone, etc at knifepoint in broad daylight in the middle of Port Shepstone last week.

It’s high time visible policing was stepped up on our streets for everyone’s safety.
