Man United crush Liverpool on the fairways – again
There was a competitive edge on the day, but the golf was played in fine spirit.
EVERY year the Pro-Vision Golf Club has a golf day where the local supporters of Manchester United take on their Liverpool counterparts.
It was held at Port Shepstone Country Club last Sunday. And like the football league in England, the results have been one-sided, with Man U dominating once again.
Each team had 15 golfers, with the Man U team averaging 33,66 points and Liverpool 29,2 points. Overall, Man U scored 505 points to Liverpool’s 438.
As far as the individual scores were concerned, Maurice Naidoo (MU) led the way with 42 points, followed by Sharms Goberdan (MU) and Abel Yeeranna (MU), both on 40 points.
Man United’s captain Sharms ‘Rooney’ Goberdan said it had been a good day, with a decent turnout. “We had a good, tough squad,” he said.
Did he feel sorry for his Liverpool counterparts, who have only won the trophy once, way back in 2010? “No, not actually,” he laughed, acknowledging the fun rivalry that exits.
Liverpool’s captain for the day was Rogers Perumal. He gave credit to Man U on the day.
“They take it seriously, some of their guys cracked 40 points and more. They played better. Simple as that,” he said.
Not even star player Graham Fabricius (aka Cesc) could stem the tide of Man U’s dominance. “We have to admit we got thrashed. But we enjoyed it. The spirit was good,” said Rogers.
Unlike Brendan Rodgers (his namesake) Rogers will keep his leadership role for at least another year.
“We’ll have to see how it goes,” he said, looking ahead. They may have to consider some big signings from other clubs.
One of funnier moments of the day saw Herald journalist Shona Aylward ducking and diving on two occasions when errant golf balls came flying in her direction.
The truth is that she wasn’t watching … as she was taking photographs of a small bug crawling around near the second green!
