Lizzie and Kim have ‘licence to thrill’
The tournament's theme was Casino Royale, and the women came dressed to kill.
EMPANGENI Country Club proved to be a happy hunting ground for South Coast golfers last weekend.
Lizzie Currie and Kim Strauss of Port Shepstone Country Club won the overall tournament, returning a score of 255 over the 54 holes.
Interclub is a different thing altogether, with the format being foursomes – which is always fun, but somewhat challenging, especially as the gold division plays strokeplay.
“It was our first time playing together and I put her in some terrible places,” laughed Lizzie. “But we understood each other and knew what needed to be done.”
After starting with 81, they ballooned to a opening 48 on the first nine on day two, but came back in 38. “We managed to pull together and showed what we could do under some pressure,” said Lizzie.
They took a five shot lead into the final day and ended up winning by three from Mount Edgecombe’s Bronwyn Rae and Vanessa Colby.
Kim thoroughly enjoyed her first Interclub. “It was just an amazing tournament. I don’t know how we won but we did. We just tried to put the ball in places where we could find it,” she said.
A highlight for her was coming down the 18th, which has an amphitheatre effect with its raised green and close proximity to the clubhouse, watched by the other women who had finished their game.
“I’m sure they could see me shaking,” said Kim. “It’s just cold, you know, it’s 35 degrees but I’m cold,” she laughed.
Lizzie then had a ‘double-bogey’ at prize-giving. “I was so nervous speaking in front of all the people that I forgot to thank Kim,” she laughed.
They both thanked Port Shepstone CC – and the women’s section in particular – for the support.
The silver division was won by Toti’s Jacqui Porrill and Charmaine Stone, but where the lower South Coast teams came into their own was in the bronze division.
Margate Country Club’s Maureen Ogilvie and Sandi Johnston scored 97 points to pip Port Shepstone Country Club’s Annie Stoppel and Cecelia Verster by one point.
They duly counted out Southbroom Golf Club’s Karen Bridgeford and Irene Schanda.
