IT was all systems go for the popular KZN Drag Racing’s # All Star Weekend at the Dezzi South Coast Raceway last weekend.
More than 110 car enthusiasts from all over KwaZulu-Natal competed to claim bragging rights and top honours when they pushed their vehicles to the limit, including a 7.8 second rail dragster driven by South Africa’s fastest woman, Vanessa Fourie.
Fast cars and roaring engines followed by clouds of smoke were evident on the track, one being a 1350 bhp Escrt called, ‘Door Slammer’, driven by Stephan Fouche and a 8.0 second Corvette driven by Quintin Fourie.

Event organiser, Michelle Lewis, said the event proceeded very well. “The challenge of racing head-to-head at speeds in excess of 200km/h was enough to give any competitor an adrenalin rush. Spectators also felt the rush as drivers put foot to the pedal,” said Ms Lewis. “The coastal venue is very popular among competitors and spectators, as many South African records have been set here. We were very pleased with the turnout as cars from across the country competed,” she said.

Also present at the event was the country’s oldest drag racer, 82 year old Reg Murray. He holds three national records in three different categories. Mr Murray said that he last competed in KZN 20 years ago. “Engine management and choice are of paramount importance and clever teamwork, the right combination of strategy and tactics together with excellent driver and car performance are needed to win races,” explained Mr Murray.

Joining the drag racers were South Africa’s top drifters, showing off their sideways action in their highly modified cars. Visitors also viewed more than 150 of KZN’s most beautiful rides which lined up on the raceway. A professional dyno run by one of South Africa’s top tuners, Steve Clark, tested over 80 of the most powerful cars. The international trail bike champions, the Le Riche Brothers, Bruce and Brent, gave a sizzling performance.
