‘Marathon Man’ Fabricius goes the distance
He certainly put his endurance to the test.
THERE’S a new marathon man on the block, in the form of Graham Fabricius (22) of Port Shepstone, who recently played 72 holes around his home course. What was the boy thinking?
Not surprisingly, when he teed off for his next game two days later, his back went into spasm. He soldiered on for five holes but then quit to get it sorted out.
He started his marathon game at 5.40am and finished at 4.18pm. Two rounds were off Sheppie’s regular tees and two rounds from the tips.
He played alone, pushed his cart, and shot rounds of 72, 73, 72 and 73.
Fabricius described the day as follows: “It was like being on auto pilot. Put the ball down and just hit it. And just keep hitting it,” he said.
He felt he hit the ball pretty well but that his putting was a bit off. “I only looked at the lines from one side,” he laughed. “But it was awesome to do it and I played out each hole like I was in a tournament,” he said.
“What can I say, young … and maybe a bit stupid!” he laughed.
But seriously, why did he do it?
“I just wanted to do it because I love golf and I don’t think anyone has done it around here yet. Not that I know of,” said Graham.
He admitted it was extremely exhausting. “A lot of us know what it’s like to play 36 holes (walking) and I can tell you that doing that twice is not for any sissie,” he laughed.
“It’s quite something going over a hole for the fourth time in one day!”
The rounds were all played in just under two-and-a-half hours.
On a more serious note, he wanted to see how many holes he could focus for. And also to see if he could get fours rounds in the low 70s.
He’s thinking of doing it again. Soon. And wouldn’t mind anyone wanting to join him!
