Sky’s the limit for cricketer Andile Phehlukwayo
The exciting young cricketer attended Margate Primary in his youth.
IT might be a good idea to learn to spell this young cricketer’s name… as there is a great chance you’ll be seeing a lot more of it in the seasons to come.
For the record, it is Andile Phehlukwayo. No problem with the Andile, that’s the easy part.
The surname, however, is a tricky one. But if cricket fans can get used to the likes of some Sri Lankan names, then this one shouldn’t be too much trouble.
The fast bowling all-rounder is only 19 years-old but has made massive strides playing for the Sunfoil Dolphins this season.
He played a key role in the Ram Slam T20 competition, where the Dolphins made it to the final against the Unlimited Titans, but ultimately lost.
Andile did at least snag the prized scalp of Quinton de Kock, deceiving him with a slightly slower ball.
Despite being a rookie, he was the go-to man in the death overs. This is not something South Africans have traditionally been particularly good at over the years.
If he can hone this skill, a long career beckons in T20 and ODI cricket.
Kevin Pietersen, aka KP, who batted so well this season, was full of praise for Andile, especially in a post-match interview after the Dolphins had beaten the Cobras in what was effectively a semi-final.
Andile was the hero as the Cobras choked and the Dolphins snatched victory from the gaping jaws of defeat. They really had no business winning that match, but Andile made a huge difference.
“He’s a tremendous talent, and what I like is that he really wants to bowl that last over,” said KP.
Andile hails from the South Coast. He attended Margate Primary and teachers still receive surprise visits when he is in town. He’s a humble man who hasn’t forgotten his roots.
From Margate he went to Glenwood High where his talent further flourished.
He was selected for the South African U19 team and it wasn’t long before the Dolphins signed him up.
So far, fans have only really seen his bowling skills, but the talk is that he can bat a bit too.
With a T20 World Cup around the corner, the selectors might just be tempted to include him in the squad. Perhaps. It might be a bit early, but it seems he has the potential to go that far.
This week he was included in a South African Invitation XI that played in a warm-up game against England. He bowled nicely, claiming the wicket of Joe Root in the first innings.
