Rose Bowl honours for golfers Gordon and Helen
The medal greensomes format is one which can see a good score easily ruined.
GORDON Huddy and Helen Strong won the JD Spooner Rose Bowl mixed greensomes at Southbroom Golf Club last Sunday.
Gordon, who has been playing holiday golf at Southbroom since he was a boy, came in to the draw at the last minute. It was a decision he didn’t regret.
The winners get their names on the board, and it’s deserved, as the medal format can be somewhat testing!
Helen plays off a 36, while Gordon is a seven – but has been much lower than that, and is a quality golfer.
The pair carded 68.8 nett to edge out Bob and Allyson Thomas, who had 69.2 nett. They counted out Cleve and Julie Walker.
The previous Wednesday’s competition was won by Gordon Moody, Jonathan Shaw, Kerry Fielden and Chris Ledden on 91 points.
In second place were Dawie Rynners, Ian Rynners, Gerd Graser and Anthony Hughes on 90 points.
The women’s competition was won by Lorraine Cook, Julie Walker, Mari Fielden and Val Volck on 81 points, followed by Biffy Dunn, Jean Purtell, Helen Strong and Allyson Thomas (ghost) on 80 points.
In the junior club champs, held last Thursday, the winner was Jean-Henri Els who had a 79 gross.
Ian Rynners won the Stableford division on 46 points, with Graeme Sole next on 44 points.
The ever-popular Pro Day last Saturday saw the red-hot duo of Gordon Moody and Kerry Fielden pick up another first place, on 44 points.
They counted out Geoff Skelton and Rob Williams. In third place were Malcom Dunn and Rob Williams (pivot), as well as Chris Poole and Colin McKay, and Dave Chambers and Charlie Watt.
Pure Gold from Graham
GRAHAM Gold produced a fantastic round at Margate Country Club last Thursday to win the Pro Shop competition on 43 points.
Pierre Malherbe was second on 42 points, with Mike Lee third on 40 points. Nearest the pins were Louw van Niekerk (4th) and Carlos Pereira (16th).
Tuesday’s women’s alliance was won by Lizzie Meyer, Jane Davies, Irene Tomlinson and Beryl Williamson on 79 points,
Saturday’s competition was won by Johan Wentzel and John Chapman on 46 points, on a count out from Michael Downs and Barbara Jackson, as well as Gordon and Debbie Ross.
Nearest the pins were Michael Downs (4th) and Sydney Shingange (16th).
Carr accelerates… again
FRANK Carr kept up his good holiday form by winning the Chicken Run at Port Edward Country Club last Friday. He scored 20 points.
The MOTHS sponsored day last Saturday was won by a fourball from Senekal in the Free State.
They were Bokkie, Poen, Suzette and Danie, they scored 120 points, but unfortunately didn’t write their surnames on the card!
Runners-up on 118 points were Rowan Schoeman, Jan-Hendrik Roos, Anton Schlebusch and Dennis Kockott, followed by Helga Wepener, Rina Rito, Alan Stead and Fellow Albertyn on 113 pts.
‘Ghost’ plays key role
THE women’s Christmas fund-raiser at Port Shepstone Country Club last Wednesday was won by Carl Grobler, Ian and Chris Stewart and a ‘ghost’ on 72 points.
One point adrift were Melody Watson-Morris, Hermien Theunissen, Dalene Steyn and Fay Patterson, followed on 70 points by Justin Naidoo, Krish Kandasamy, Paul and Leon Bunge.
Saturday’s competition was won by Peter Stoppel and Roly Shaw on 47 points, two ahead of Thys Blom and Hans Stols on 45 points, who counted out Shaun Nathanson and Mark Smith.
