Top Southern KZN golfers have it all to play for
Competition for places in the team is expected to be fierce.
THE Southern KwaZulu-Natal Golf Sub-Union annual general meeting will be held at Port Shepstone Country Club on Sunday, January 17 at 4.30pm.
This will take place after the SKZN Closed, which will be played at Port Shepstone CC over 36 holes on the same day. Gavin Sole is the defending champion.
SKZN will field a team in the premier league and one in the B league this year.
Any player who would like to be considered for selection would need to play in the Closed as results of this event, and others, will be taken into consideration when finalising the two teams.

B division (handicaps 10 and up) can take carts.
The format will be similar to last year, to encourage attacking, matchplay type golf.
So: six points for an eagle, four for a birdie, two for a par, zero for a bogey and minus one for double bogey or worse.
The idea is to reward good play and not overly punish a bad hole.
There will be a prize for the champion and runner-up as well as a ‘Handicap’ prize, to give the higher handicap players something to play for.
This will be worked out by simply adding a player’s handicap onto their points at the end of the tournament.
In other news, there has been a major change in league. The premier league now has 10 teams, split into two pools of five each.
This means that SKZN will play two home games and two away games. If they win their pool, they will play in a final against the winner of the other pool.
Fixtures are as follows: February 21 vs Durban CC ‘2’ at Beachwood; March 6 vs Toti at Port Shepstone; April 3 – Bye; May 22 vs Mount Edgecombe at Port Shepstone; June 5 vs Royal Durban at Royal.
The final is scheduled for June 26.
The central team will be in the B section next year, and the format is the same as premier.
What has happened is that there is now a Premier, A, B and C league, each with 10 teams. D league has been scrapped.
Fixtures are as follows: February 21 – Bye; March 6 vs Cotswold Downs at Cotswold; April 3 vs Durban CC ‘C’ at Durban CC; May 22 vs Durban Golf Club at Port Shepstone; June 5 vs President’s Team at Port Shepstone.
The final is scheduled for June 26.
The May 22 fixture coincidentally sees both teams at home, which is unusual but quite nice. It just means the B league guys will go off on the 10th.
The following will be borne in mind when choosing teams: commitment to playing all the games, previous league results, previous Interzone results, results from the SKZN Open and SKZN Closed, results from other KZN Golf Union tournaments, matchplay ability.
