Golfing James Gang unscathed in Southbroom ‘Shootout’

The annual event attracted numerous international golfers.

AS usual, there was a lot of movement on the leader board during the final round of the Southbroom International Shootout played at Southbroom Golf Club last Sunday.

The tournament attracts golfers from around the world and is played over three days (alliance, betterball, and then individual, with three to count).

“Sunday is always an interesting day,” said co-convener Sheena James.

The club thanked the main sponsors, namely Colin McKay of Applied OutSourcing, as well as Outlook Trading Post, Cole’s Kitchens and Southbroom Pro Shop for their contributions.

“We especially thank the players, both local and international, who thoroughly enjoyed the format on a course in wonderful condition,” she added.

It’s also a tournament which throws up some interesting nicknames for teams.

This year’s winners were Calamity Jane and the James Gang, namely Mari Fielden, Kerry Fielden, Gordon Moody and Derek James.

“The team gelled really well, coming in on different holes,” said Derek.

They carded 292 points over the three days to win by 10 from Suidkus Manne, namely Edwin Steyn, Frik van Zyl, Johan Erasmus and Dries Barkhuizen.

They counted out the Bloody Foreigners, namely Emil Heirhold, Hannalore Heirhold, Roger Phillips and Heather Anderson.

Four points behind them were the Zurich Highlanders in Bob Bosshart. Oswald Padrutt, Chris Huber and Heiner Spoerri.

In regular competitions, last Wednesday’s women’s comp was won by Sandy Fitzgerald on 40 points, one ahead of Alexandra Huber.

In a tie for third on 37 points were Sandy Luus and Rene Matthew.

Robbie Cumming won the men’s comp on 45 points, counting out Bruce Matthew. Third was shared by Cleve Walker and Hjalmer Meyer on 43 points.

Saturday’s comp was mixed in with the Shootout field and saw Derek James and Mari Fielden win on 47 points.
