It was ‘old school versus new school’ drag racing at Dezzi’s
Those who live their lives a quarter-mile at a time headed to the Dezzi South Coast Raceway.
THOSE who fancied themselves as the racing type, with a moderately fast car to race other wannabes down the quarter-mile (400m) strip, headed to the Dezzi South Coast Raceway last weekend for the SA Drag Fest 2017.
This was very welcome news for the thousands of petrol heads and car fanatics who have an issue with illegal street racing.
Drag racing, fuelled by excessive speeds and side-by-side competition which heightens the senses, has become one of motor racing’s fastest-growing and most entertaining branches.
Organised by KZN Drag Racing and Gas Magazine, the event provided the optimal surface for serious competitors to attempt to break the infamous 10-second barrier.
Planned as two days of intense drag racing from some of South Africa’s fastest cars, the event had to be reduced to one day due to the heavy rains.
Drivers pulled to the starting line and, when the green light came on, they pushed their cars as fast as possible to the finish line.
Spectators saw dozens of extremely quick machines, including a barrage of old-school cars from Ford Prefects, Mazdas, and Opel Rekords to the modern Nissan GT-Rs, BMWs, Mercedes Benz and Porsches.
Marburg drag racer Neeran Govender said that the racing might be over but he couldn’t wait to get back in his race car. “This drag has been a challenge and I am looking to move forward and faster.

I qualified strong and, instead of thinking about what I could have done differently or better, I am going to focus on the positive gains,” said Neeran.
Owner of Dezzi South Coast Raceway, Dez Gutzeit, said that the event was a real spectacle for the crowds. “Drivers got a chance to burn some serious rubber this weekend,” said Mr Gutzeit.
“The drivers handled themselves with professionalism and class, constantly working hard to break into the winner’s circle. We commend them for their dedication and never-quit attitude.”
