Ray Nkonyeni Municipality workers protest delay in grading

A question arose as to how some workers were graded, and others were not.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality workers marched from Dick King Square to the municipal offices earlier today (October 26) to query why they are still on grade 4.

Workers demanded to know why they have not been moved to grade 5.

They said the process is taking too long; they are tired of holding discussions, and they want to know when they are getting their grade.

Municipal Manager Khetha Zulu revealed that some of the workers are already getting a salary on grade 5 and some are not. “So even if some are graded up, they might not see a difference in their salaries.”

Zulu also mentioned that because the matter is now in court, nothing further can be discussed; however, the workers have a choice to continue with discussions or leave the matter to the court.

“I do not have the right to upgrade the workers. Councillors and management were graded by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, and the workers will then be graded by the municipal council.”

The workers questioned how some workers got graded, and some did not.

Discussions are still continuing at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre, and the workers said they will continue with the protest tomorrow morning.
