‘Grip it and rip-it’ in Dean Goldhill fashion

Golf has a habit of producing some real characters.

IF Dean Goldhill was a pro on the PGA Tour, he’d probably get a lot of television time.

Maybe not for his level of skill, which, he will admit, is not as its career-best, but more likely for the antics he produces on and sometimes off the golf course.

This is not trick photography: Losing your head over a short putt takes on new meaning, as shown by Dean Goldhill, who actually holed this tiddler.

Dean has played some golf for Southern KwaZulu-Natal and was a member of the team that played in the KwaZulu-Natal Country Districts golf tournament at San Lameer Country Club recently.

For a start, poor ol’ Dean was moved from number eight in the A team to number one in the B team.

No one really likes to get dropped, but ironically it may actually have been to his benefit.

On the morning of the opening round, he was due to tee off at the back of the field. Had he been number eight, he would have been first off.

So anyway, while in the process of getting his clubs out of the car and getting ready to go, he inadvertently locked the keys in the boot of his BMW 740i.

Breakfast time: Impala at San Lameer Country Club.

These cars were built like armoured vehicles to keep government officials safe, back in the day.

There was just no way he could find a way to pop the boot or dig in through the back seats.

It would have been all right if his wife hadn’t needed to get the kids to school.

It may also have been less stressful if she didn’t need to get to work. And… it probably would have been completely all right if it wasn’t her first day on a new job!

Eventually Dean had to head for the tee box, leaving his wife to wait for the locksmith.

He sucked in some nicotine on the way to settle his frazzled nerves.

Finally, it was his turn to launch one.

It came out like a rocket: fast, low flying, and aimed directly at a target!

Next on the box: Dean Goldhill, in the nicotine of time for his game.

The target turned out to be an unsuspecting impala, grabbing some breakfast in the semi-rough about 50 metres away.

Whack! The ball caught it midships. “I think I killed Bambi,” said Dean.

Truth be told, Bambi was only startled, and trotted off to restore some wounded pride.

Later in the weekend, in which golfers had to endure some very wet weather, he rounded things off with a putt between the legs.

Best bet is to have a look at the photo to see what is meant. It pretty much summed up what was not the greatest weekend in terms of results.

Still, Mr Rip-It was able to provide the humour.

And the pants, as he has sponsored the premier league team with this trendy gear for the year.
