Golf pro Derek James ultra happy after Two Oceans marathon success
Persistence pays off in the end, if you are prepared to go through the pain barrier.
IT was worth it in the end for Southbroom Golf Club professional Derek James, who was one of the many runners, some from the South Coast, who successfully completed the recent 56km Two Oceans marathon in Cape Town.
Although he has been training for some time, he thought he would be a non-starter, due to picking up a few minor injuries.
At the last minute he decided to go on the trip anyway, to support Grace Hughes, an internationally recognised physiotherapist based in Southbroom, and ‘maybe run’.

Grace has also helped Derek recover from some of the injuries.
At the last second, Derek’s competitive nature got the better of him and he couldn’t resist taking on the challenge.
In the end he got it done in 6:26 which is not a bad effort at all, especially on debut. Grace clocked a time of 6:02.
“He was the most surprised due to the lack of training with those nagging injuries, so we are all thrilled he did it,” said Derek’s wife Sheena.

Derek and Grace ran in the colours of South Coast Striders. They met up with Dr Brett Karlson, also based on the coast, but who ran in the Savages colours.
Liesel Dudley was part of the support team but didn’t run due to injury.
