A NEAR full house turned out for the start of the 2017 Umtentweni Tennis Club championships last Saturday.
Players took part in a round robin with the top four individuals battling it out in a finals match.
Taking the men’s doubles title this year were Keagan van der Merwve and Brighton Dara. Runners-up were Rynecke Swanepoel and David Whateley.

Liesl Smith and Reel Fincham played a formidable match against Mary Wood and Chantelle Donald to win the women’s doubles.
The day ended with George van der Merwe’s birthday celebrations. Happy birthday George and thanks for the delicious borewors rolls.
This coming Saturday (July 8) will see Liesl Smith play Chantelle Donald in the women’s singles final at 2pm, followed by social tennis.
The following Saturday (15th) will be a shootout between Keagan van der Merwe and Rynecke Swanepoel for the men’s singles title, to start at noon.
This will be followed by the mixed doubles round robin.
Players are asked to please let Liesl know if you intend taking part in the mixed doubles fixture.
Members, family and friends are urged to be at the club on the 15th by 12pm to watch the men’s finals and for players to get ready for the mixed doubles round robin.
This day will mark the end of the championships, finishing off with prize-giving and boerewors rolls.
On a final note, the club would like to welcome new members Jenny Sim, Jenny Connellan and Chris Connellan.
