Volleyball teams trade power attacks at social tourney
It was a family event with the emphasis on enjoying the game.
THE long-awaited social volleyball tournament kicked off at Marburg Sports Complex last Saturday with 12 teams participating. The non-competitive matches, which cater for those who are learning the game and the older folk, had a total of eight teams.
The youngest team, appropriately named the ‘Kids’, showed their skills and gave some of the teams a good run for their money. For some of the ‘oldies’ who dusted off their takkies, the last time they played volleyball was as long as a decade ago.

The non-competitive division was divided into two groups of four. Group B had ‘Ivan Air’ finishing in first place and ‘Hateful’ second, going into the semis, with ‘Ivan Air’ not dropping a set.
Group B was a tightly contested group with ‘Vipers’, ‘Drunkers White City’ and ‘Assassins’. After using the points quotient to separate teams, ‘Vipers’ finished top of group B and ‘Drunkers White City’ second.
The crossover semi-finals saw ‘Vipers’ beating ‘Hateful’ convincingly and the ‘Ivan Air’ edging out ‘Drunkers White City’ 25-23 in a very tightly contested game.
The finals saw the young high school boys, ‘Vipers’ edging ‘Ivan Air’ in two tightly contested sets to become the newly-crowned champions in the non-competitive section.
Indeed, at the end of the tournament, the novices in the non-competitive section would be nursing their sore bodies for the next few days.
The competitive section had four teams comprising ‘City Boys’, ‘Port Shepstone VC’ , ‘Everything’ (the only team with two women) and ‘Lunatics’ (who had some older players who have not played in over a year).
The first match was very tightly contested going into the third set with ‘City Boys’ just edging ‘Everything’ 17-15. ‘Lunatics’ were unlucky to lose all three matches.
‘Everything’ played well with two women in this tough division and were unlucky not to make the finals.
The competitive section finals were contested between ‘PSVC’ and ‘City Boys’, with the first set belonging to ‘PSVC’ with ‘City Boys’ making an impressive comeback in the second set to take the match to a nail-biting third set. ‘PSVC’ edged ‘City Boys’ in the final set, becoming competitive section champions for 2017.
Indeed, this was an encouraging start to the 2017 social volleyball season, which had experienced a lull over the past few years and social convener for the Port Shepstone Volleyball Association (PSVA), Jason Govender, would like to see more social teams entering so that local volleyball can achieve its former glory.
