Riversmead South Coast Warriors brace for final league battle
The league season is ending on a slightly better note than expected.
PRISON walls may have been easier to break through for the visiting Newcastle Highlanders at Douglas Mitchell Sports Ground last Saturday, such was the extent of Riversmead South Coast Warriors defensive effort.
In the end, the home team won the match 42-0 to keep hopes alive of avoiding relegation and staying in the Premier League next season, something which had looked like a lost cause a few weeks ago.
For this to happen, the Warriors will need a full house of points against Jaguars at Douglas Mitchell Sports Ground this Friday night, with kick-off at 8pm.
And they’ll also need Empangeni Rhinos to lose to UKZN Impis, so their fate is not entirely in their own hands.
It was quite a hot day for winter last Saturday, but perfect for running rugby.
The Warriors ran in six tries, scored by Chris Mitchell, Lourens Stapelberg, Theo Nicholls, Joseph du Preez, Damian May and Dylan Kroon. Jaques Petzer-Moore slotted all six conversions.
Captain Mitchell was pleased with the result. “I was really proud of how the guys played. We stuck together and put up a great game. Thanks to all the supporters who came out to cheer us on,” he said.
