Singles title not quite what the doctor expected
The championships coincided with the finals weekend of Wimbledon.
WHILE Wimbledon has a singles winner who everyone knows (well done to Roger Federer on his record 8th win) Umtentweni Tennis Club has a new singles champion in Reynecke Swanepoel, a local doctor at the Port Shepstone Regional Hospital.

Unfortunately Keagan van der Merwe (a bit like Novak Djokovic in his quarter-final) had to withdraw due to an injury, in his case a knee issue.
His place in the final was taken by George van der Merwe, who bravely stepped up to face the heat, and where a torn pants situation delayed play.
Despite this, the champs ended on a high note, having been played over the course of three weekends.
A new format, which included a round robin qualifying stage, was introduced this year. It proved to be a great success, reflected in the higher numbers of players and of course the fun.
The men’s final was followed by a mixed doubles round robin.
Once again participants accumulated scores individually, with the top four players meeting head-to- head in the best of 15 games.
This was won by Raj Naganna and Chantelle Donald.
Reel Fincham and Liesel Smith won the women’s doubles, with Liesl adding to that by beating Chantelle Donald in the singles, playing the best of 15 games.
In the men’s doubles, Keagan van der Merwe and Brighton Dara won the trophy.
Members thanked Liesl and Reel for all their hard work and effort in organising this successful event.
