All that was needed was some strawberries and cream.
ONE might have been forgiven for thinking that one was watching Wimbledon live on TV.
First services went off like rifle shots at the speed of sound.
Volleys were exchanged with blinding, cat-like reflexes, while aging legs and dodgy knees scurried to every corner of the court.
It was clear that the sharp edge of competition had breathed new life into ordinary Saturday players at Uvongo Tennis Club who lifted their games to dizzy heights as the championships continued over three weeks in July.
The matches were subject to the best of three games with the doubles being played in the round robin format, with the singles being sudden death, played over three sets.
In the ladies singles Ellene Barbadimos triumphed over Di Digby.
Peter Digby was too good for Ralph Burls, who in his day played tennis at international level in the seniors section.
The ubiquitous Peter Digby turned up again in the men’s doubles with André Parnell as his partner, as the something less than mobile pair defeated Ralph Burls and Duncan Biggar in a humdinger.
Di Digby and Ellene Barbadimos were too strong for Sonja Watt and Lynn Shell in the ladies doubles.
The mixed doubles final played by Peter and Di Digby against Ralph Burls and Ellene Barbadimos could not be finished as darkness fell after two nail-biting sets. Outcome to be confirmed.
