Strong start for Southerns

SOUTHERN KwaZulu-Natal got the Ebbo Bastard Sub-Unions rugby tournament off to the best possible start, with a resounding 33-10 win over Durban Rugby Sub-Union (DRSU) at King’s Park last Saturday.

The team, which included a number of Riversmead South Coast Warriors players, ran in four tries to one, securing a bonus point in the process.

“It was the perfect start,” said Dougie Haralambous, president of the Southern KZN Rugby Sub-Union.

Head coach Christo Henderson echoed his sentiments. “It was a superb performance from the whole team, an excellent start,” he said.

Although he has handed over the reins of the Warriors captaincy to Chris Mitchell, big eighthman Juan van den Berg led the way last Saturday.

He was obviously pleased with the result, but his highlight of the day was something different.

“Nice not getting injured for a change, I’m getting old,” he laughed.

Truth be told, he’s approaching 33, but has some serious rugby miles in the ‘old’ legs. Still though, he’s a quality player.

For a lot of the players, including those from Kapaailand, Kokstad and Scottburgh, it was their first time playing at the stadium.

“It was a great experience,” said big centre Theo Nicholls. “The grass is long and soft, which cushioned some of the hits, but I felt it the next day.”

It couldn’t have been too bad though as he was out on the golf course the next day, playing in the Margate Round Table Golf Day at Southbroom Golf Club, along with prop Tian Malherbe, manager Pieter Smith and wing Tiaan Gericke.

Men of the match for Southern KZN last Saturday were Riversmead Warriors players, hooker Damian May (forwards) and flyhalf Jaques Petzer-Moore (backs).

Tries were scored by May (2), Petzer-Moore, Sipho Dunywa, who hails from Kapaailand and Tiaan Gericke, who came off the bench.

Petzer-Moore also kicked two conversions and three penalties.

The next Ebbo Bastard Trophy game will be against Zululand away on Saturday, August 26.

Southern KZN will fancy their chances in this match as Zululand got hammered 53-18 by Northern KZN last Saturday.

The final game, against Northern KZN, is scheduled for King’s Park on September 2. That game will be a cracker.

The Warriors play Rovers this Saturday (5th) in the Murray Cup quarter-finals. The match will be played at Douglas Mitchell Sports Ground.

Kick-off is at 1.30pm for second team and 3pm for first team.

Junior Warriors are hosting the DRSU Colts tournament at Douglas Mitchell this Sunday (6th).
